USBank Prequal -- is it legit?

So last week I did the prequal/recommended thing on USBank and got suggested the Secured Card.

Today, I did it again and it's recommending Cash Rewards card and Kroger Card.

I hit the back button... put my wife's info in and it said "We hav no offers for you at this time".... I hit back button.. entered my info again and back to the two cards offers.

My scores are 600/630/638... I'm assuming no chance in the world at a US Bank card with those scores, right?

If I were you, I'd click on the link again rather than using the Back button before filling out the form again.

It's telling I'm pre-qualified for the Cash+ with a 14.99% APR. From my experience, if you get a specific APR, it's legit.

All it suggests for me is the US Bank Platinum card.

I just gave their pre-qual site a visit, and it came back with "We have no offers for you."

That's very humbling... not even 'pre-qualified' for a secured card... LOL!

(I certainly don't need additional cards, but my scores are in the low 700s... apparently not high enough for the secured... )

With that said I think the pre-qual site is better than it use to be, as it leaves out the countour card. I do see set apr on platinum as well at 14.99. I also bank with them though and have a CC with them, so maybe makes a difference?

U.S. Bank was only giving me their prepaid debit card when I was doing their prequal. Then all of a sudden I received a regular card offer (don't remember which) spoke to a customer service rep and asked how legitimate this would be and was told that since I have a mortgage and checking account for a few years in good standing that it was likely to be approved. Applied, denied,ugh. Now I did te prequal again and it says no offers.
The only silver lining is I still do not see a hard pull in any of my credit reports just a soft pull.

It probably makes a difference, since it shows an APR range for me.

I'm prequalified for the Cash+, Perks+, and platinum cards, and the apr ranges were shown for each card. However, my scores are in the 650s across the board, but my mortgage is through U.S. Bank. It never occurred to me to apply for one of their cards (and I won't until my scores improve), but I'm surprised to read that many are only prequalifying for the debit/secured card when I'm sure their scores are higher than mine. I'm still waiting to see if anyone has gotten approved with lower scores.

Don't wait. Go into a branch and see about applying for a card. Seriously.

I have a mortgage with US Bank, since late 2007. In mid-2009, with $100k of open balances (approximately 80% total utilization of $126k CL) and no CC with US Bank, they called me to ask me to take a credit card. Who am I to refuse an offer like that? So I wore that 1% card out, carried balances at 15% and never missed a payment, then they called me in late 2013 to send me a Cash+ card (because I had not responded to the mailed offer to convert the existing card to a Cash+).

I got the Travel Rewards for $17k a year ago, then closed it after a few months. I got the Fred Meyer for $10k in December. The original first card I just converted to be my second Cash+ and get BT offers every month for all three open US Bank cards.

US Bank loves their existing customers who pay their bills. Go in and talk to a banker.

There are no U.S. Banks in my area, plus I have a lot of inquiries right now. However, I have had my mortgage with them for 9 years and they recently reached out to me to refinance my mortgage. I'm very tempted to apply for one of their cards but I don't want to risk another inquiry if it will only result in a denial.

If you show a prequalification for the Cash+, even with a range, I'd be inclined to go for it. They will evaluate your application for the Cash+ and may decide to issue the CashRewards instead, which is a simple 1% back card. But then you would have a card to use and show history. Auto CLI are common after about 9 months (all three of my open US Bank cards have had auto CLI at about that time frame, December's Fred Meyer Rewards card went from $10k to $14k recently) and after 6-months to a year you can inquire about upgrading from CashRewards to the Cash+ if you don't get it in the initial app.

If they decline you because of INQ, well, then that might be their reason, and you would know you need to garden for a while and be motivated to do so. If they give you even a basic card however, then you gain a toehold into much better things later on.

From what you're saying, it sounds like face-to-face interaction and an established relationship with the bank increases the odds of getting an approval when you might not meet some of their criteria (e.g., minimum credit score). Since I can't speak to anyone at U.S. Bank in person, do you know if they are equally benevolent over the phone? Their nearest branch is a whole state away from where I live.

There is one way to find out

I've not called them, there are branches near me, but they have national contact numbers as well that might work, such as the Minneapolis or Portland area numbers, where their main office towers would be.
