Hey folks, it looks like Discover it is giving us gas and ground Jan thru March! Now, if Freedom would only give us grocery stores for Q1 I'll be all set:

Sadly, won't be getting much use out of me. I buy gas once or twice a month and have used ground transportation maybe 4 times in my life. I figured they'd be doing this for Q1 again, as they often do. At least they keep it consistent, but has always been a lame quarter for me.

Thanks for pointing it out though. I'm sure some will find it useful.

Excellent. I was expecting gas to be a 5% for Q1 but having it confirmed is great. I've been using Sallie Mae for gas for so long that I can tell I'm going to need to resist the instinct to swipe that instead.

Nope, I certainly didn't get it for this one. Sounds like you do, tho.

Edited to mention that not everyone has the card yet and may not have access to "what's coming" on the website. They certainly would not be getting an email. If I was deciding on a card for next year, I'd love to know what the Q1 cashback was going to be. I'd do that by doing a google search and right now nothing is coming up. Now, hopefully, this post will.

Not really impressed with gas in the first quarter its winter and a lot of people dont travel a lot then, its good for them but not good for us and Im sure its why they moved it to the 1st quarter instead of summers quarter. I have dual SMs anyway for 5% back on gas as needed.

eh this isnt really useful to me either. $24 fills my tank and I spend maybe $40 a month on gas working so close to home. SM covers it. No need for ground transportation anymore.

But still might be helpful info to others so thanks for sharing.

I'll still be buying gas at Costco with EDP (and then CSP). It's convenient enough, and even with a double-rewards IT promo, it will be cheaper than traditional stations.

5 % gas would probably be more useful for me in Q2 or Q3. I was thinking I could go the gift card rout since I don't have SM( I so wish I hadn't missed out on that one) and I'm still on 15 month 0 % interet on purchases. My 711, which does not have a gas station, codes as one. Mind you, I only shop there about once a year when I'm hankerin for a slurpee.

Totally random, but tangential fact, it's illigal to pump your own gas in my state so "paying inside" with a gift card might make this not such a great deal for me either.

Boy that's funny. Freedom gets gas as a 5% during busy travel time, and they get torn to shreds. Discover does it during the dead of winter, and barely a word of discontent.

Actually, I'll be spending a few hundred dollars on train tickets, and 10% cash (or 11%-12% value in gift cards) certainly beats 2 URs (since I don't book United Business).

My driving habits don't change much, so it doesn't make a huge difference when that deal is for me. However, the DC bonus is good, and Discover is offering more than just gas. It is all ground transport. That means that people who take the train or bus to work can get their tokens or passes at a discount, which Chase doesn't offer. Cabs also get discounted, which is great for people who work and live in the city. You might also be seeing an effect from SM no longer taking applications. With a dedicated 5% gas card, Chase (or Discover) doing 5% back on gas isn't exciting. Without it, people care more. Discover has also done a much better job at building goodwill with users than Chase has.

+1 what Petrovius said. My driving habits don't change and I take public transpo several times a month. I'm actually hoping freedom keeps the same exact schedual and doesn't change it because that makes it even more of a perk if you have both cards.

I use both modes of transportation and where I live, gas is super cheap around the winter time so my discover will be getting lots of use now, for the holidays, and in the first quarter for getting around

Normal gas spend+gift cards=easy max out of 150 dollars when you figure in the double cash.

As others have said Discover assuredly does this during Q1 as it is the lowest travel quarter of the year.

If the Sam's Club Gas actually codes as Gas for Discover, then I'll definitely get use out of this. I usually use SM at Sam's Club, but since my Discover cashback will be doubled, this would be nice. However, sometimes Discover codes differently. For example, restaurants or fast food within Disneyland code as such on Visa/MC. However, Discover codes everything as "Disney Parks". I guess I'll have to do a trial run in January. If it doesn't code that way, then Discover will just get my non-category spend for Q1.
