TJX credit card experience tonight

An hour ago I was inside of TJMaxx, I needed to buy one gift card and wanted a $100.00 amount on it.

No big deal, 100 dollar gift card isn't like a big big deal, right? I give the cashier my gift card, say 100 dollars and she goes I need to call the manager because she has to be here for gift cards above 100 dollars. Im like ok, I understand this but the manager is in layaway and we are waiting like 10 minutes here. Whie we are waiting, she is talking to the manager on the headset and telling her to press down to talk, release to listen. Back and forth till I said, listen if the manger here cant run the head phones, what great importance is she going to have at the POS. no reply. its not my policy, i know you dont make the rules hun but come on this is stupid.

So she finally comes up. I told her, I want a 100 dollar gift card, I am paying with my TJX credit card, here is my Drivers License, oh I also have my passport in my bag because I was just traveling, and here is my state id. three forms of ID. She says sorry we dont take TJX credit cards for gift cards over 20 dollars. You can only use this card to buy one 20 dollar gift card.

Im like this is NUTS!!!! Oh well sir this has always been the policy. Im like NO ITS NOT. And because you have had made me wait here for 20 minutes. I am going to make you wait while I pull up a gift card transaction puchase on an old statement from tjx card on my phone. I do and she goes sir this is always the policy, I said ok even proof and you are ignorant.

She then said, now if you have a debit card you can do 100 dollars. But if you have a charge card, we wont even accept it as form of payment for a gift card.

I said a few real nice words and left. Im done with the stores this holiday season! lol

Exactly!! Granted this is just my experience at one store in Chicago, therefore who knows what their policy is. She kept telling me to call 800-marshalls. I did and it just keeps asking me for my zip code to select a store and won't give me CSR. I'm going to call and find out the policy though at some point lol.

At my workplace if we get a gift card over 100 and its a credit card. We tell the customer we gotta call for authorization. Generally due to the high theft of stolen credit cards we get in our store. Its an empty threat but almost 100% of the time the scammer freaks and runs.

TJX is sooooo inconsistent when it comes to rules. What's the case in one store totally changes in the next store. Did you ask for the policy in writing?

Many stores are starting to disallow credit cards as payment for gift cards. So while it may be annoying, its not unheard of and will probably spread to more retailers as time goes on

This is nuts! Now, I have the TJX Mastercard and need to return a few items tomorrow so I'll see if that "policy" holds the same for stores in Ohio. The Marshalls store is anchored next to HomeGoods where you can also do gift cards. I have purchased $100.00+ in g/c's with my TJX MC and never had issues.

Now, they didn't say total maximum per visit but you could always break the total amount into $20 per visit (annoying of course) but have you tried online?

I have no sympathy for someone that holds up the line for freaking a gift card. One freaking gift card! What did that minimum wage, register girl do to deserve this.

My granny goes to TJ Maxx, Home Goods, Marshalls and all and puts her little hands on everything just to get out of her apartment for the day. If she buys a little something it always gets returned once the newness wears off.

No I haven't. I went online and u can send an egift card to someone up to 500 dollars in minutes. You can buy up to 2000 dollars of gift cards online. Now wouldn't it seem easier for someone to commit some fraud this way? Lol who knows, I'm just putting a 100 in their bday card, buy what u want where u want lol.

Luckily I don't want any sympathy but thanks for letting know. I agree though, I really try hard not walk around like the most ignorant person in the room, but it's not my fault they wanted to hassle me.

First off, no offense but you weren't there so unless ddemari can clarify exaclty how many lines were open to service other customers then what gives. Secondly, it was a matter that the OP needed to address since there was a purchase being made - whether it was a discrepancy in price, standard goods or merchandise, a return, or gift cards that are at the register. If the store manager is not competent to handle such a transaction (i.e. store associate may not be trained properly or not know about store policy, etc), then who is?

And let's not even try to place someone as a victim. The OP has as much right to know about the store policy if something may have changed since there appears to be inconsistency on how that transaction was handled.

I know, you wanted to be right. I mean, where is the justice. Don't they know who you are? To you, that $100 is chump change. To that cashier, it might be one weeks pay. Sometimes, we need a reality check.

Thanks FinStar, there were 4 cashiers who had knew nothing about the policy, no line. Dead store. Believe me I not standing there brow beating some cashier. Now her RUDE manager who just kept referring me to 800 marshalls in this condescending tone, ya she did deserve some words from me. Northface28, your comment is pointless thanks.

I work for fortune 100 for 20 years. New directives get passed down every week, it seems. I've yet to see anyone complain to the regional president.

We do, as we are told. Policy changes are common in Corp America. Cashier and manager are doing what they're told to do. Complain to CEO.
