Price Protection and holiday shopping

Yesterday we bought a TV at BB. We used Discover via Apple Pay for the 22% back. I had vowed to think about things like price protection and extended warranty and stuff when I made major purchases, as well as straight cash back. We're using AmEx for most things now, the Disco/Apple Pay thing is the main exception.

jsucool posted in the Walmart offer thread about price protection/rewind (Citi) and Black Friday prices. That led me to confirm Discover's policy:

Price Protection Discover covers the difference if you find a better price.

Shop with confidence now. Don't miss out on the sale price later. We will refund the difference up to $500 on eligible items if you find a lower price at any store within 90 days of purchase.

The TV already went on sale an additional $300 today. I'm betting it will dip even lower at some point during the season. I'll definitely be keeping tabs on it and if it gets difficult with BB to get the difference, I know I can pursue it with Discover.

Also, extra 1 year warranty.

Are others looking into this and using it as part of their holiday shopping strategy? There is NO WAY I'd be anywhere near any retail establishment on Black Friday. No way.

Best Buy won't give you the difference. Be sure to keep a hold of the ad where the TV is $300 cheaper. All you should need to do is submit it, along with the receipt to discover and they'll give you the money back.

Wow, then things have changed. I know in the past with both Best Buy and Lowe's, as the price dropped on things, we've gotten the difference refunded. The fridge before this one (that we sold to my inlaws when we reno'd the kitchen summer '14) the price dropped various places and we went back again and again and kept getting the difference refunded within 30 or 60 days or something. It happened with an old TV years ago too.

I know BB has had changes in policies because they no longer charge a restocking fee. But I'd be surprised if the product is still in the return-eligible period that they wouldn't refund the difference (given I could just return the item.)

All that being said, it's nice to have Discover to back that up.

ETA: The prices seem to by sync'd. Amazon, Best Buy and B & H were all the same yesterday and all dropped $300 today.

You should be able to go to best buy and get a credit back, I was told when I bought my laptop last month they will refund difference if it drops in price within 2 weeks of purchase.

+1 Not sure if the rules are different for black Friday, but I bought a printer on sale this spring, and next week it was on sale for even $30 cheaper, and Best Buy refunded me the difference no questions asked.

keep in mind it's 30% cash back:

1% for regular purchase
4% for bonus category to make 5% total
10% for apple pay bonus

double it all for the promo.

Pretty sure Discover has included Black Friday deals in price matching in the past, as have others (Citi, I believe? Not 100% sure). It's worth checking the terms and conditions for your accounts before writing it off as an option! Also worth being cautious to make sure the item numbers are exactly the same, etc., if you're planning on making a purchase specifically with Black Friday price matching in mind... some retailers will create special BF item numbers or bundles to avoid this very issue.

Credit card companies will continue price matching, stores will not.

The issue with black friday shopping and price matching via credit cards is that everything must be the same model of whatever product it is.

Black friday sales are often very vague about specific model numbers and brands.

Uh I hate to even think of how much money I've wasted by not price matching over the years! Not anymore! I even comb through my recent statements to make sure there's nothing i can price match.

It's a feature I've never used so i will definitely consider it with my Discover card this season. Thanks!

We're actually likely going to exchange the TV. Light bleed in the corners. DH is angling to go to a higher model. This helps. Argh. Still. But wow!

I was excited for a minute, but I'm not seeing it. I remember the question being asked 'Is Best Buy a Dept. Store?' But I'd still say no. Yes, it has registers in multiple departments. But really, it's an electronics store right? Anyone have any hard evidence?
