Comenity is creepy

Called in to cancel my West Elm credit card this afternoon. It hurt a bit, as my CL is $11,600, and I've had the card for two years, but I really don't need the card and Comenity is not making me feel very warm and fuzzy lately because of all they are doing to myfico friends. I love West Elm and will still continue to shop there.

The creepy thing was, when I called West Elm CS to cancel, she verified my phone number and other information, and THEN read off on the phone to me my other Comenity Visa and Mastercard accounts by name (Total Rewards Visa Sig, etc) and said, 'I'll be updating your phone number with all of these cards too, ok?"

I said there was no need to update since everything was current. Rest of the conversation went fine and I closed said card. Felt a little better for doing so. Losing Comenity dead weight is fun.

It just felt a little creepy to have her read off my other Comenity Visa and MC each by name and tell me she was updating the phone number when there was no need. Never had a conversation like that with them before and it creeped me out a bit.

My other cards are not new and have some history, and I don't have very many Comenity cards, but I may trim another one before the year is out. Hang in there everyone and have a great week.

That WAS creepy. Perhaps because of all we are seeing here on the forum? I can understand wanting to shed some of the Comenity weight as they seem to be on a closing spree themselves.

I must be missing something.... Why is it creepy that a lender can see all the accounts you have with them??

Thanks, musiclover! Just the way the conversation went was odd. It went from me confirming my phone number to the lady saying " I see here that with Comenity you also have Total Rewards Visa Sig, etc, and naming each of my cards by name, then telling me she was going to update phone number on my other cards rather than even asking if any update was needed.

Weird, weird. Seems to be Comenity's tagline lately, however.

It's creepy when it's Comenity and they read them all off in a row, after all the weird shenanigans they have been doing to others.

I've had multiple conversations with Comenity CS on each of my cards over several years and have never had them do that before. So yes, it's weird and different from what I've experienced with their CS previously.

Weird you had to even talk to anyone....Automated system when I closed cards asked why I was callling I say close account...Automated systems asks me a few follow-up questions and ask if I still will to close account I say yes and then it is closed. You got transferred to live rep?

No, I requested to be put through to CS because I just paid off a $22 balance and wanted to confirm that I wouldn't owe any extra interest. I'd only had the balance on there for 4 days, but wanted a person to confirm that I was all zeroed out and good to go.

Next time I am definitely doing the automated closure, CC. That conversation was just weird to me.

I just close them online via message. I don't find a bank knowing my exposure creepy. When I call Chase to transfer trade lines the rep always has the information.

Will definitely close it online or by automated system next time. I didn't really even feel like talking to them. And Chase is definitely a different animal from Comenity.

Perhaps I'll be the outlier on this just like the above poster but I don't see anything creepy about it IMO. I have (and had) several accounts with them and any changes that I need to perform are all done in one call! Why wouldn't they be expected to see your entire relationship - and it's not like the other accounts are hidden from their view

BOA and Chase (amongst a few) always ask the same thing when you have multiple accounts with them. Seems pretty business as usual. Plus, as CC mentioned above, one has the option to close via their automated system without having to request a CSR unless the call is automatically routed.

I've never spoken to anyone when closing comenity card. Automated number not sure if it's different than on back of card but under general questions it lists phone number to call to cancel. When I did the first one I was surprised there was no live person lol.

Agreed lol. But, for me, Comenity served a purpose when rebuilding. Then, like my high school sweetheart, it was time to move on.

Not a problem with them seeing the entire relationship. But going through and mentioning each account specifically and telling me they'd update each account when I didn't request any update, yes, that is weird and has never happened in the many, many phone conversations I've had with their CS before. Other accounts have never even been mentioned previously.

I think we're all a little sensitive with Comenity lately and have a right to be given the customer unfriendly things that Comenity has been doing to others.

That will be my strategy if I decide to close another one, ddemari.

It is fun getting rid of Comenity dead weight, I must say.

And I can definitely see that if it was totally unexpected or caught you off guard. Now, what would be creepy is if they started mentioning some of the purchase history to see if they could persuade you from closing the account...such as "I see that you purchased a lovely table in a beautiful smooth finish on October 20th Ms Humuhumu... How are those fabulous candles from September?...given you like using our card, would you like to keep it open... Oh and your bday is coming up!" That would be creepy

They did try to keep me from closing the card - talked about special financing offers, and said that I always paid in full so they didn't think interest would be an issue.

They didn't mention my birthday, though, and they had just sent me a $25 West Elm gift card a few weeks ago for my birthday. I'm feeling a little offended now that they didn't remember.

Whatever happened to the idea that Comenity and Comenity Capital were operated seperately? I guess that idea is out the window now?
