hi all,

I have read many people being offered the secured discover card for college students after being denied the the unsecured version. I am wondering if this has worked for everyone so far? Also what is the specific card that you have to apply for?

You apply for the regular Discover card. If your credit doesn't qualify you to receive it, they may offer you the Discover secured card. But it isn't offered to everyone. Don't know who or why they offer. All you can do is give it a try.

I was more wondering about the people who have applied for the student card. Apparently most people who apply for the student card and get deinied are offered the secured card. I know the question then becomes what if you are not a student, but people were still applying and getting offered the secured card anyway. Has this worked for anyone who has applied for the student version and yet is not a student?

I had a friend apply for the Discover It Chrome (not as a student) in May. He was denied and recieved a counteroffer for the secured card with the same benefits as the card he applied for (Chrome). He had really bad credit including 7 or 9 collections with a score in the high 500 to low 600

So it is my understanding that if you were denied for the Discover It, you will get a secured card with the same benefits as the Discover It card. If you apply for the Discover It Chrome Student, you will get the Secured version of a Discover It Chrome Student and you will be evaluated after a year to determine if you can move up to the real Discover It Chrome Student. You will get the same benefits on the secured card as the card you applied for; I am not sure on this, but that was what my experiences told me.

If for some reason you don't qualify for the student version of the card, then you will be offered the secured version of the card. Discover is a small bank, and the forms results are not automated. Discover will make their own recommendations. I was offered a student version of the card but I never indicated in the form that I was a student. And I'm not a student, but I still was approved for the card. And also, my application was a result of getting a Discover chrome ad in the mail. It interested me, so I applied. I didn't qualify for the regular but took the student counter offer which I am grateful for.
