Hi all,

I am probably going to apply for just one of these in a month or two. American Airlines is the airline I have the most invested in. I have 80,000 miles with American Airlines and they are a major airline at the airports I fly from. The other airline I fly is United. I have 60,000 United miles and have the Chase United MileagePlus Explorer card.

I have received a targeted offer for the AAdvantage card of 60,000 miles with $3000 spend in 3 months. My rent alone is $1148, so this spend would be met very easily.

I was looking to get peoples opinions on which one is, in general, probably a better bet for me. I am likely going to dump United after I use my miles with them and have always had nothing but great service with American. I know American is devaluing their miles, but it doesn't look like i'll take a big hit. My purpose of racking up AA miles is to (hopefully) get a free ticket to somewhere in Asia.

So in general, would I be better served getting the Citi Prestige or the Citi AAdvantage Platinum card?

EDIT: I also expect to get approved for either card. I have positive history with Citi, having had the AAdvantage card (5 years ago), Simplicity card and DoubeCash cards in the past.

While the AA is granting a 50K mile bonus for $3K in spend (used to be for only $2K spend), you are correct in that AA is currently devaluing it's miles.

The Prestige, while with a much higher AF gives you better overall value, such as:

$250 annual credit on travel purchases

4th night stay is free at any hotel, regardless of location or room type.

ThankYou points can be used for travel purchases and are valued higher than AA miles. So, comparatively, you'd spend less in ThankYou points vs AA miles for the same flight.
