AMEX Plenti card - unsolicited card sent ?

I got an email from Amex announcing a "Plenti" card from Amex and

informing me that I would be receiving one shortly. I didn't apply for one

and my reports are frozen.

I have my long time BCP that seems to have the Penti beat for rewards except for

perhaps restaurants. It wouldn't be of any use to me and Amex should probably know

that.

Anyone else get this email ?

What's the deal with the unsolicited card mailing ?

Is it an offer for a new account with no HP ?

The card isn't popular on MF for a reason!

@OP weird email..Call them and see what is up.. Maybe it is a pre-approval? I would suggest against it though if it is for this card. Obviously you know what you want or don't want though. Could be phishing as stated

You are probably right.. Just the rewards cards as amex owns plenti and not the actual worhtless CC.

I think it's telling you to sign up for plenti account. I do have plenti account but I haven't even used it once. 😐

Yikes! I have two Amex cards in good standing and I do NOT want one of these things!

Well, never mind it IS a credit card, and you're right,. not just rewards odd.

My guess is call them if you don't want it. But likely they've already checked your credit score (maybe a soft pull?) which is why they're sending the card to you (and apparently to me too)

When mine comes, I'll check it out see what the rates are, and if its not something I want to bother with, I just won't activate it.

Not interested in saving with Plenti? Just discard the Plenti card we sent you. You can sign up later if you change your mind.

Here's my thought; if its a CC, then you either have an account in really good standing; they did a SP (can they do that without asking?) They for sure didn't do a hard pull! they have to ask for those.

I go back and forth but I believe its mainly a rewards card, but I think we're all going to find out once we get the thing in the mail.

I received the email, too. I read it as just the rewards card you can swipe before you use your credit card to pay for Exxon, etc. No big deal, just a marketing push.

@Chickenpotpie: Your existing creditors can SP or HP you at will. They have permissible purpose. However, it is very rare for a CCC company to HP unless you initiate something.

This email is not talking about Amex Plenti Credit Card. My understanding is that, it is talking about Pleti Program Rewards card with welcome bounus of 500 plenti points.

I am pretty much sure, it is not Amex Credit Card. They [ Amex Pleti program ] are sending Pleti Program Rewards Card so that at some point customer will barge in and apply for Amex Pleti CC.

Hope I am not wrong with my understanding.

I can confirm it is only a marketing ploy to get you to sign up for the program. It is not a credit card. It was in my mailbox when I got home today.

And also, the reasonableness test. Is it likely that a company like Amex is sending out unsolicated credit cards? This is much more like the way I keep getting mailings from AARP with "my" membership card inside (and in that case I would have to pay for real membership). Amex is trying to drum up interest in Plenti.

As said before, it is not the credit card, just a membership card. It is not active so if you actually want to join the Plenti program you have to activate it.

I ended up tossing it since the program is useless to me, even if the points were worth something, I don't do business with a single one of their partners.

There have been times, the most recent being prior to the 2008 meltdown, when major banks sent out

credit cards unsolicited and all you had to do was activate them for the account to be opened. I have

received many unsolicted major bank cards. None since 2007 though. So your "reasonableness test"

fails with someone who has a little more experience. I wouldn't predict the practice is about to become

common again in the near future but I wouldn't be surprised to see it again someday. For way more than

1/2 my 30 year CC experience it was common practice and I have shredded many times more than the

accounts I've ever opened. Around the end of the dot.com bubble I probably averaged 2-3 unsolicited

cards a week. Maybe the number of unsolicited credit cards arriving could be used as a stock market

timing indicator.

I have to admit that what caused my confusion with the Plenti card email was googling "Plenti" rather

than following the link in the email. Google's top link goes to Amex's page explaining the range of

apr's and other boilerplate for the credit card. It seems like a situation ready to cause confusion to have

a rewards program membership card and a credit card with the exact same name.

Signed up by linking att account, used att email. Not same as credit card emails. Got same email, and card today (or yesterday) . It's the rewards card, two pieces together. Wonder if I can take the amex one, and use it with the current account? More money off att bill, still get 5% back.
