Costco Changing to Visa Only

Hello everyone! New here, but have always lurked around and love this forum. With Costco moving from AMEX to Visa in April, what card do you guys reccomend for cash back on gas purchases made at Costco?

My Info: Recently Refinanced Home

Age: 26

Credit Scores: EQ: 669 EX: 643 TU:697

100% Payment History, Before Refi 90% Utilization, Average Age of Accounts: 4 years

My Cards: AMEX Everyday 5K Limit - Balance around 1K as of today (my go to card right now), Discover It 3.2K Limit - 0 Balance, Chase Disney Visa 2.5 K Limit - 0 Balance, Citi Cards Best Buy - 2K Limit - 0 Balance, and then the card that I had since I was 18 is a recently converted Citi Dividend Card to a Doube Cash Card - $530 Limit ? - 0 Balance.

All with no annual fees.

As you can see the only Visa I have is the Chase Disney and personally I do not like the rewards for purchases outside of Disney.

We don't know how Costco will code, so I'd go with a basic 1.5% or 2% back card, such as CapOne QS. If it actually codes as gas, a 5% card like the PenFed gas card or 3% like Chase AARP would be better.

Thanks for the response. That PenFed looks intereseting, so I'll be waiting to see how they code it and then I'll make my decision. What do you think about the BankAmeriCard? It's a Visa and their 3% cash back on gas doesn't sound bad.

And OT, how do you show pictures of the cards you have on your signature, that looks pretty cool.

I have an Amex TE, and I'm going to see what happens to that. If Citi does in fact take over the portfolio, I'll first have look at their rewards structure (though it looks to be similar to the TE so far). If it is the same as the TE, I will use the Citi cobranded card for gas (3% at Costco gas), and my Orbitz Visa (2% straight rewards but can only be used for prepaid hotel bookings on Orbitz) or QS (1.5%, but straight cash) - which I will have to changed from Mastercard to Visa - for everything else.

I might also call Citi and see if they will reissue my Double Cash as a Visa.

I would go for Chase AARP before Bank AmeriCard for the unlimited 3% gas/3% restaurants. It's easy enough to beat 2% on groceries that I don't consider that a perk at all. Of course, I'm guessing that Costco Gas still codes as wholesale or warehouse or whatever, so you'll probably need a gen spend card, rather than a gas card.

For in-store, I think Cap One's QS will be a good option. I don't have any good Visa cards for gas, however. I'm guessing the Costco pumps will code as "Automatic Fuel Dispensers"

also regarding the coding, that is not a one size fits all rule. I would of course NOT complain if my costco started coding itself as gas. that would be AWESOME. I am sure that it will stay discount store?

Now if that were the case, it may fall under one of UMB simply rewards categories. They cover 5310 which is kmart, walmart, target, family dollar, etc. Depending on location of course.

I also would say there are plenty of better options out there for a cash back card that is a visa to use at costco. What about barclays? What other options are there that down cost folks 3 HPs?

what exactly is that CB14?? Sounds cool! I have bought sams club gift cards before for 5 percent, and pay with 2 percent card.

I also have a Costco Gift card with a small balance on it and that lets me shop in club without a membership in the event something is on sale and my friend cant go with me. (I let him shop at sams once or twice a year w/ me and do the same w/ him at costco)

I see sams gift cards for 2.37% off, I will probably get a few w/ my double cash...but I am willing to forfeit some pct loss in hopes of Sams MC upgrade.

As an avid sams club plus member, I have to say Costco reigns supreme with their soup made in house, their rotisserie chickens that they take a loss on (i think some people got sick on them though?) and also their Pacific Bold K cups.

Yeah, I just buy it directly from Costco. I shop there a lot, and it's not like I have a spectacular alternative that earns an ongoing 5%.

I think your right, after looking at all the benefits that the Chase AARP has, I think I might go for that one. I checked my recent statement for my AMEX and it the description of the purchase says Costco Gas so I'm hoping it's coded as such. Based off the info I provided, what do you think are my chances of getting approved for the Chase AARP sometime in April? Keep in mind the scores I posted we're before I paid off all of my credit cards and had somewhere around a 90% utilization. Now I believe I'm right below 10% utilization and exclusively using my AMEX.

no it can't be switched. Best bet is getting fnbo bucksback or fidelity visa which are both 2%.

lol yes there is a whole plethora of articles for cheap folks such as myself, however I despise many of the articles...they encourage folks to buy the membership, eat samples multiple times a day, then get a refund at the end of the 364th day, then buy a new membership. ha ha.
