My Discover was opened about 6 months ago. I need some information about Discover CLI. They won't give me increase before 91 days and the increases are only for $500. I seen some post saying they get increase more often then 91 days? I'm I doing something wrong here? Decline reasons are inexperience with current limit.

How heavily are you using the current limit?

With only 6 months total history on the card, it could be that Discover is comfortable with the $2,500 limit for now.

I don't think Discover considers the limits on other CC when deciding on the CLI amount.

I had a temporary CLI to $8k, which expired in early May 2015. The CL went back down to $5k at that time (technically a CLD). I had used that $8k very heavily, over 95% utilization at points, with BT and charges.

I requested a CLI on May 16, got $1,000, to $6,000. Bummed because I thought they liked pushing the $8k limit and paying it down.

Requested an APR reduction soon after that, which was denied, and the denial letter said "no APR reductions within 4 months of a CLD".

So I held off on the CLI requests for a while, thinking there was an overhang in many areas from the CLD.

Got another CLI on September 23, $500 to $6,500.

Expected to wait another 90 days, but tried again on November 1, got CLI $1,500 to $8k now.

So the CLI that I have gotten are not under any particular pattern, I just keep trying. I'm holding off on the next request, even though it's been more than 90 days, because the balance on the Discover is just fractionally over 30% utilization, and I'm waiting for the credit bureau report at that "over 30%" level before I mess with the CL to see the utilization go under 30%, and any effect on my score from crossing that Utilization threshhold.

That usage is good to see. There's not much more you could do to "show experience with current limit" beyond that, so kudos for the effort.

With time, I think you should start to see larger CLI amounts. It does take time to build that history.

What are the timings of your CLI requests and approved CLI?

There is no rhyme or reason with Discover. Some are 31 days, some are 91 days, some are none at all. My usage is way, way less than yours - average of $105 a month - and my last CLI was $4500 at 31 days. But the one before that took 91 days and was much smaller.

I'm sure it is an algorithum they use to which we will never know....outside of score I'm sure usage, AAoA, and the entire profile has a say in it as well ( as with all things, unequal as they may be) What works for one will not work for all, as we have seen time and time again. I was just thankful to get approved 2 months after BK DC with a 7.5K SL now 8K. I dont mind it it doesnt grow fast.

Two $500s and a $1000 (I think).

Some people get them every 31 days... others at 91. Some can't get a CLI to save their life.

Before my most recent, which was my 9th CLI, I had never seen a big one. All had been between $500 and $1500.

Waiting till the 91st day is generally a good idea unless there is a gravy train running.

For a good chunk of people, that's when Discover thinks you are eligible for a CLI.

I got a $3k CLI by waiting a few days over 91 days. My FICO is 785 TU.

Also, if you are getting the "not enough experience" note, I'll say it's a good sign. That means Discover thinks your profile is fine (HP not necessary), just take some time. Try in a week or so (91 days).

1) Use it everywhere and no other card (unless better benefits)

2) Get a higher credit score and income

3) PIF (pay in full)

Nothing else you can do.

@Anonymous wrote:

There is no rhyme or reason with Discover. Some are 31 days, some are 91 days, some are none at all. My usage is way, way less than yours - average of $105 a month - and my last CLI was $4500 at 31 days. But the one before that took 91 days and was much smaller.

Yeah, the less thinking with Discover the better.

I have had constant $1-1.5K CLIs whenever I press the online button for over a year now, but this was after 5 years of almost nothing without a HP.

So, I've abused the button. Sometimes 90+ days if I forget about my credit cards, sometimes less than a month if I'm impatient. They give a CLI every time - whether the account activity is $50 total or $500.

My GF has had an account with them for even longer than me. They've increased her CL just once in 8 years.
