Sportsmans Guide - HP inquiry for payment plan?

I purchased a gun and did the 4 x installment payments option for being a member. I got an inquiry from them and have never applied for their CC. Is that normal or should I ask to have it removed?

I read over the agreememnt to be billed on my own credit cards- no where does it state they will/require a credit pull.

Essentially they are providing credit by allowing you to pay installments. It probably said in the fine print that "they may require a credit check", which is notice for an HP.

If you have your gun and are happy with your purchase then no harm. It's only 1 HP and likely not worth any hassle, especially if you are pleased with your firearm.

Kind of a bummer though that they are charging your card anyways instead of you paying to some account they own.

I use 4 Pay extensively and yes I do think I remember receiving a hard pull the first time I did it. Ive had lots of 4 pay orders active at the same time and ive not run into any limits.

Really though I dont know of another retailer that lets you do anything like this. There are some that do a layaway plan or take out an actual loan but by far SGs got the best deal/plan.

Id recommend their credit card for the additional 2.5% off and free $50 worth of reward certs after $500 spend. Not the best but if you use SG often its worth it especially if you get it without hard pull.

Id rather have them charge my credit card, that way I can pick what reward card to use. But I just use their credit card they they pre qualed me for since its pretty decent.

Theyre comenity anyways wouldnt want another account with them with the rate theyve been terminating card holders collection of cards

Oh so you did get a card from them? I though they HP you so you could break up the payments using your own card.

I have used the 4 pay plan with no HP. I also was approved for the CC with no HP either. I guess it is a grab bag!

Yes, much later after the fact. I had been using 4 Pay for some time before they pre qualed me for it and then asked me to apply on checkout.

I'm sorry that happened to you! But how did they get your social security number??

I've never purchased a gun in my life, but perhaps they did the credit check as part of background check to buy the gun? you can make multiple payment billed to your credit card on any other item but they don't have enough information or authorization to pull your credit.

Sportsmansguide or any other online firearms vendor dont do "background" checks for firearm purchases. They will sell anyone a gun BUT it MUST be shipped to an FFL (i.e gun store/pawn shop) where you will then undergo a background check (or not if you have CC license in some states). You are forced to pick an FFL to have the gun delivered to no exceptions.

Basically, background checks are done when physically picking up the gun from the receiving gun store/FFL and usually for a fee ($15-50)

It is quite reasonable to receive a credit check if paying in installments. After all they are letting you have the goods now for 1/4th the price with basically no collateral from you other than the credit card which you could just deactivate or close.

Ive looked around and really, I cant find a similar system anywhere that rivals the 4-pay plan.

This is a very interesting thread.

I'll just add that a few years ago Bose had a similar plan where you could use a card to pay over a period of several months, interest free. I bought my noise-canceling headphones directly from their website ($299 at the time) and I had it billed in 12 installments to my debit card (I think they added the tax and shipping to the first installment). At the time my credit bureau files were all frozen (and I had horrible credit anyway) so there was no HP.

It was a good deal, having an entire year to pay with no interest... I'm not sure if they still have a similar program, but if you're interested in their products it's worth a look.

Edited to add: I got curious and I checked the Bose website; it appears the payment plan option is no longer available.
