AMEX CLI

Hi,

I just had a quick question, I was hoping to know what to expect.

Last night, I hit the luv button on my AMEX Hilton card. Had the card for about a month (the first bill just cut), and thought I would try. I recently was denied an increase on my BCP due to "too many inquiries". Requested a 3x increase. Got the dreaded 5-7 day message.

This morning, I received the following email from AMEX:

"We've finished reviewing your credit limit increase request. To get the details of our decision please contact our Customer Care team at your earliest convenience by calling" xxx-xxx-xxxx

I probably won't be able to call them until sometime tomorrow. Just wondered what to expect from the call.

Probably a verification issue to make sure you requested it or maybe they need more info. from you such as income verification etc... Update the thread once you talk to them. All the best.

Uh oh... It's usually a bad idea to request an Amex cli before your 60 day mark. If they decline you, you're screwed for 90 days.

The 61 day rule no longer applies. Many people get CLI's as soon as activation of the card.

Right, but the 91 days since denial for CLIs still applies. So I'd think depending on the use of 'recently' it hinges on that. The day count is across all cards: 91 days after deinal for CLI and 181 days after successful CLI.

+1 I just received my BCP asked and received nice CLI upon activation.

CLI denied!

But I can try again in 90 days (already marked on my calendar). And, seriously, AMEX gave me some ridiculous SLs (the BCP is still my highest CL by far), so I'm not too broken-hearted.

As stated above the 60 days is gone. 90 and 180 are still in place. Even if 60 was in place, if one jumped the gun one could request after the time period lapsed.

As for denials, a denial would be because of something in one's credit profile. Don't just assume that the issue(s) that led to a denial disappears after X (with X< 90) days. If one is "screwed" it's not from making the request and having to wait 90 days. It's because of the issue(s) in the credit profile that need to be addressed.

Low to mid-700s FICO, the only thing I ever see as denial reasons is AAoA and HPs, so the ONLY thing that will fix that is the passage of time.

I don't know the actual reasons yet. Waiting on the letter.

is there a way to look up when the last time you requested a CLI was? So that way you'll know when your 90 days is up?

I'm not sure when the last time I asked for a CLI was on either of my cards.

Nope

The only way is to back track statements and see when limit changed....rough estimate tho it may jog your memory

I use a spreadsheet and list dates of all CLI's under each card that way I know the precise date

That's what I've started doing, a spreadsheet. I also note 90/180 days in my Daytimer, so I know when I'm due to try again,

I recently applied for a CLI with amex. Account was about 40 days old. Got the 5-7 day message,then an email to call, when I called they said declined and US mail would explain why.

When the mail came it only had one reason for denial " account has not been open 60 days"

So I think like most things it is a YMMV.

2 things I noted also about this 1. No hard or soft pull

2. the envelope came addressed from the new accounts division

I forgot to write down the date when I got my first one so I called and asked. The CSR gave me the exact date I could call back.

Finally got my letter today. The only reason for denial was that the account was not open for 60 days, so it appears to be hit or miss with that rule.

Just curious why they asked me to call, only to be told I was denied, and that I wouldn't be able to find out why until I received the letter.

Interesting. That's two - and the only - examples we've seen of this denial reason. I wonder if they have now gone back to the 61 day rule?

The way I tell with Amex is that each time I try for a CLI (so far all denials) they immediatly send me an email. I keep those messages, and then when I know I'm getting close to 90 days I can go back and look up the exact day.

To calculate 90 days, I use the following site:

Using the tool on the website factors in the exact number of days in each month (28, 29, 30, or 31).
