I've run into the same problem!

Also, do you have specific goal scores? (Ie- 800 Club, mid-700s) Or do you just want to naturally see how high your scores will get?

No problem at all. Anyone can ask me anything. I'm an open book.

I majored in business management and business marketing. I also minored in economics. As far as goal scores I'd be happy with anything over 720 because to my understanding at that point you're already qualifying for the best rates and anything over that are just bragging rights.

If I may, what college did you go to? Did you do any internships? Because that could have helped you alot in landing a job right after college you know... Often time, very expensive and private schools have strong connections to companies where their students can go to and do their internships..

We could have a thread just on this question alone haha. I went to Warner University. It's a small private Christian school here in FL. I went there on a sports scholarship. I also had a sports scholarship to FSU and North Florida but they were too far away from home. While I was at college there were a lot of problems at home with my parents (more than I thought with my problem haha) so I had to make sure I was close enough to drive home on a moments notice, but not so close that I wasn't able to live my own life.

It seem you are/were very dedicated to your family. You are a good man... I have heard of the college but not much. I see why you probably had difficulty getting a job after school...

Thank you. I really am family oriented because at the end of the day it's all we really have. Some have it better than others though, that's for sure!

Yea, again hindsight is 20-20. If I really cared about my future at that time I would NOT have gone to that school and I would have became an attorney or a doctor to secure my financial future. Now I feel it's too late to get started in that especially not having anyone to fall back on if I mess up, except for my fiance, but she has a good career.

I agree on not going to the school but since you are 31 years old, you can still become a lawyer or Doctor. Since you mention lawyer, let use George Luce as an example in his mid thirties who made the decision to go to law school. This was a letter he wrote when he went for an interview and didn't get the job. The letter might be pathetic to some people but when you read it over and over again, you will begin to understand George and his tenacity...

"To: Johnson, Loreatha

Dear Loreatha,

I received your letter dated May 11, and I am extremely disappointed that Vinson & Elkins has chosen not to extend me an offer. I remain convinced that V&E is the right firm for me. While it is hard to quibble with the verdict of a panel of 14 people, I believe that a real mistake was made, and I ask that my application be reconsidered.

I assume that V&E's chief objective in hiring new associates is to get the best people it can get. Please consider the fact that in law school, I earned the top score in my section on EVERY PAPER in both of my legal writing courses. (The grading was done anonymously.) My article was selected for publication in the Northwestern Law Review, which is one of the top law reviews in the country. Judge Amy St. Eve, a federal judge with whom I externed, will tell you that I was the best extern she ever had (and her externs were mostly cream-of-the-crop Northwestern students, many of whom went on to federal appellate clerkships). The Judge I work for now, as well as other people with whom I have worked, will tell you that I have unusual talent as a legal analyst. I suggest that before you conclude that I don't measure up to V&E's standards, you ask people with whom I have worked what they think about my work and my abilities. At risk of sounding arrogant, I submit that I would be a standout performer at V&E, even though V&E is an elite firm that can select from among the best candidates.

I sensed that some of my interviewers were uncomfortable with the fact that I am not committed to a specific substantive area of law. I would argue, however, that the tools that we bring to the table as lawyers are far more important than the direct, "relevant" experience we bring. "Practical" experience is no substitute for creative intelligence, intellectual sophistication, and pure tenacity. The career clerk in my judge's chambers has 20+ years of experience, so she knows a lot of things that I don't know. But she is not in my league as a legal analyst and writer. I have seen enough during my clerkship to say with confidence that I am capable of better work - far better work - than most of the "experienced" attorneys who practice before my judge.

As a judicial clerk, I have been deeply immersed in all sorts of cases at every phase of the litigation process. There are many procedural issues that are common across all different substantive areas of law. There are many connections and overlaps between the different substantive areas. Even within a given substantive area, every case is different, turning on its own facts. The relatively inexperienced associates who specialize in a particular area will have only seen a small part of the universe of possible issues that may arise in their area. Given these facts, I am highly skeptical that, say, a 3rd-year associate who has specialized in "oil and gas" is going to be light years ahead of me in that field. The hypothetical 3rd-year associate will certainly know a lot more than I know about the art and practice of lawyering. But it is highly doubtful that her substantive oil and gas knowledge (which of course exceeds mine) will give her a significant advantage over me when it comes time to analyze the next oil and gas case (which will no doubt involve issues that neither of us have seen before). I want to work on interesting, challenging cases, but I don't believe it would be rational for me to arbitrarily limit myself to a specific substantive area of law at this point in my career. I'll find my niche down the road. I would think that V&E would prefer that their new associates be open-minded enough to try different things.

I would also add that there are intangible factors to be considered. I left a lucrative job in my mid-thirties, working hard to score in the top 1% nationwide on the LSAT so I could go to an elite law school. (I was the oldest guy in my class.) When I was a computer programmer, I was a one-man consulting firm, saving my employer (the state of Louisiana) millions of dollars in costs and making the lives of thousands of people (the system's users) easier. Often, I would go to bed at night, half dreaming, half awake, obsessing over a thorny problem that I encountered. When the creative inspiration would come in the morning, those were the greatest thrills of my life. I know what its like to work 80-hour weeks for months on end. I know what's it like to be considered the expert of last resort - the guy they call in the middle of the night when the data gets corrupted and no one else can figure out what to do. I take my work SERIOUSLY and I take great pride in what I do. I would submit that these are the qualities that can make me a "franchise player" at V&E.

I recognize that the chance that you will reconsider and extend me an offer are very slim. (Lawyers tend to be extremely risk-averse and unwilling to do things differently than they've done before.) But please give this request some serious consideration. I suggest that you begin by talking with some of the folks who have worked with me.

Finally, if you are not willing to change your verdict on me, would you please do the favor of giving me some honest feedback about why you were not impressed enough with me to make an offer? Is it my age? (I'm 39, but I'm healthier than most 25-year-olds.) Is it that I'm losing my hair? (I am willing to undergo transplants!) Is it the fact that I wore a pink shirt to my interview? (My wife picked it out.) Is it the fact that I took the Louisiana bar exam before taking the Texas bar exam? (I took the Louisiana exam because I wanted to get licensed in my home state, and I wanted to get it out of the way first because I had to learn all that civil code stuff.) Is it because I have spent most of my life in Louisiana? (Houston is only a 3-hour car ride or a 40-minute plane ride from Baton Rouge.) Is it because I have a minor speech impediment (a "lacerated S")? Is it because I am introverted? Do I come across as arrogant? Too timid? Is it because I'm not committed to a specific substantive area of litigation?

You judged me as a qualified candidate based on my paper credentials, as evidenced by your willingness to expend the resources to bring me in for an interview. I assure you that I am a much better lawyer than even my paper credentials suggest! Please give me another look. It would be a shame if V&E and me are deprived of a mutually profitable relationship because I failed to present myself well in person on May 8.

Sincerely,

George Luce"

It is not too late to switch career fields..

Hello people,

In a series of AMA's we are going to be having, today, we are going to have user @Broke_Triathlet on and he will be taking questions about his credit decisions, why he join myFico, what he has learn, what he likes, what he doesn't like etc. Feel free to ask any questions especially thought provoking one's but be polite about it. The first goal of the AMA is not to be judgemental but rather why we on the board arrive at certain decisions that some people think are insane.

The second goal is to use this as a learning process and also to help new people joining th board so that they don't make certain bad decisions.

DONT'S: Please, no snarky comments. Lets respect the user and let's get started

I will get us started.. @Broke_Triathlet, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I'm a 31 year old male that really didn't care much about credit until the last 5-6 years. Before college I never even knew what a credit report was. My dad had me go to a stupid expensive private college and had me take loan after loan out. I didn't even care about going to college. He used to be financially secure so he promised to take care of my loans, he just wanted me to get through college. He used to own 20 rental properties and was doing very well. Boy was I an ignorant SOB. I paid no attention to anything... A few years after graduating college I was being sued from BOA, Progess Energy, Brighthouse, etc. The only problem is I had no clue about these issues. To my amazement I was being sued for just over $100,000 in miscellaneous debts. Long story short it turned out the cause of this was my father. You see, while I was at college he opened up several credit cards, utilities (for his properties), and lines of credit. I wasn't receiving any bills, statements, etc because he was having everything mailed to the house when I was not present.

Once I pulled a credit report for the first time in 2012 I was amazed!! I had collections (didn't even know what the accounts were), late payments on my student loans (still haunting me today) among several other issues. I couldn't believe what was going on...

Due to that, I had to file for a Chapter 7 in 2012, which was discharged March of 2013. There was no way I could recover because as a recent graduate and I had a really hard time getting a job. I double majored and a minor but I couldn't get my foot in the door with large firms because I didn't have experience and I was over qualified in starter positions because of my degrees. So I was damned if I do, damned if I don't. So I took a contractor job (not blackwater) in Afghanistan for a year to try to get me a headstart on my debt, but it was to no avail.

It's been very frustrating because I was forced into something that I'm going to pay for the next 7 years. I didn't get a fair start coming out of college, but all you can do is take it all in and move on. I do believe he planned on keeping everything up to date, but it didn't turn out that way.

With that said, I'm improving nicely and starting to make some headway. Because of my savings rate I'm not worried about money even with my very modest income, have some investments going, and heading in the right direction. The boards have been a great knowledge base for me and I look forward to help out other people here who were in a couple pairs of old shoes that I used to walk around in.

I'm an open book so ask me anything...

Wow, what an intense introduction. My first question of many is, how was your dad able to get all those credit in your name? Did he add you on his accounts at an early age for you to have a good profile?

I love knowledge so I really try to spend a lot of time learning about stuff! I started to "gain confidence" once I started having people asking me about what they should do with their situations whether it was a friend, family member, coworker or a friends friend. I actually have some "clients" I work with frequently. By "client" I mean friends that I spend an hour or two a week teaching them about what I've been through, how this affects your credit, how that does. It's amazing how little knowledge people have sometimes that can really affect their lives. But I was once there even way after I became an adult, even into my mid 20's. I have a friend that didn't realize that credit apps are a hardpull, or even what an inquiry is.

@Anonymous wrote:

Wow, what an intense introduction. My first question of many is, how was your dad able to get all those credit in your name? Did he add you on his accounts at an early age for you to have a good profile?

Yea actually once I turned 18 he really started to build my credit for me. I did have a few cards prior to all of this (with a few nice limits) which were in good standing and closed prior to my BR. I had a few Dell computers financed for the house and college, amongst other things. I was in the mid 700's prior to all of this, according to him. So he did build a credit "castle" that he ending up demolishing in the end. I don't think he did that intentionally though. He's a good man that was in a bad spot and made a horrible investment. I'm confident in saying that he didn't have bad intentions, however I did get rail roaded. Which he still brings up and apologizes to this day.

Hi there, wow that is an incredible journey. All the stories I read about people stealing someone idenity and taking over their credit life span, each story sounds like a nightmare. I am curious like yes its me said, has your dad owned up to this? and did you forgive him? Man, it would take a bigger person than me to forgive right away but mabye down the road. Its crazy how these things happen and most of the time its not a random occruance.

How did you strategize your clean up effort?

EDIT- i just saw your anwser the question about your dad

I'd really like to make more income even though I currently save 51% of my income (not including investments). I'm not a big spender but I would like to build more of a nestegg for the future. I currently have 9 months of expenses in an E-Fund and currently snowballing my $18K in student loans (only debt I have other than my normal $200 a month in CC balance).

I'm really hoping to have a larger savings and investment accounts while knocking out my loans (or at least 8%-90% of it). My fiance and I decide to pay for our own wedding and not depend on our family (which I'd have to cover my family's half anyways...haha) so we can start planning that for our Nov. 17' date.

Other than that, I'm hoping to learn more on here and just let the last of my baddies to fall off in 17'.
