Popularity of Amex Gold vs. PRG

In public, I see quite a few PRGs and some Amex Gold Business cards. I rarely see a plain personal Gold card.

When I was growing up, I remember Amex Gold cards were supposed to be prestigious (and, I'm assuming, were a popular choice for charge cards).

So when did the PRG variant become so much more popular? Or are plain Gold cards more popular than my observations would suggest?

the PRG just has a better rewards structure for a tiny extra fee. that's why people like that more

Plain Gold card offers really nothing special over a Green except a higher AF and a different color. PRG though, if you have non-trivial spend (think something like 30-35K was optimal) is an excellent card if MR is your deal. Business Gold has recently been pushed for some period of time, I keep getting the 75K for 5K offers somewhat regularly and the 3% pick your benefit is truly excellent if you have a bunch of spend in a category that isn't covered elsewhere.

Admittedly new Simply Cash Plus might scavenge those users who aren't travelling much to leverage MR, like me.

The gold prg is more popular I guess, I have the platinum and I still feel like it's not as popular as the gold prg lol.

I think part of it has to do with Amex marketing the PRG more than the Gold card. I've seen many offers and advertisements for PRG, but I have never seen an advertisement for the Gold. They are really great looking cards!

I'm aware the PRG offers more than the Gold. I've had a PRG for two years and squeezed a lot of value from it. What others are saying is true, but is widely known and not relevant to my questions.

Does anyone actually know when the PRG became so popular, compared to the Gold?
