It is phrased in a fairly confusing manner. The purchase tracker really only means that you only get cash back on purchases and payments of purchases, and not balance transfers or cash advances (just like pretty much any other rewards card).

I really think Citi needs to figure something out for the reward system on this card. It's confusing, no matter how you slice it. There are different answers as to whether you can pay the charges immediately or not, etc.

In my experience -- SOMETIMES, if I have paid a charge "quickly", it took an extra month to get the extra 1%. Don't know why. It seems if it's too close to the statement cut date, the extra 1% doesn't "process" in time. Other times, presumably further from statement cut date, paying the charge early hasn't impacted my extra 1%.

Personally, I find the reward system kind of a pain and not user friendly, so I don't use the card very much.

This question comes up very often, and is usually swiftly answered with several posts to the contrary of what is asked. The reward structure can be quite confusing if you are adamant about paying off charges as soon as possible, yes; however, you aren't going to not get your cash back, which seems to be the biggest concern I've read, rather than it being delayed. It's literally 1% on purchases and 1% on payments. The only scenario that I have heard of people missing out on cash back is if they take statement credits, simply because it lowers the amount you are capable of paying in order to get the 'other 1%.' Of course, Citi provides several options for redeeming cash back, so I find this a nonissue.

Regardless, I can't think of a single card in my large array that doesn't have some kind of caveat or requirement in order to obtain the full value of its rewards program, so I would have a hard time holding it against the Citi Double Cash. Additionally, almost all of them have a delay in awarding points/cash back.

I pay as soon as the payment post, and I have never had a problem getting the extra 1%.
