They will NOT approve a CLI. I'm so puzzled by this. For about two years now, I've had that Check Spending Power button available for all three of my AMEX cards (Green, BCE and Delta). In these two years, they have NEVER approved me to go over my credit limit when I've checked through this button. Not even 20 bucks over! LOL! So all of a sudden this week, I checked, and to my surprise, it approved me to go over my alloted credit limit on all 3 cards! So I thought maybe it was a good sign that I would be approved for a credit limit increase....WRONG. I checked on my BCE, requested $1000 CLI. DENIED. YET, they approve me to go OVER my credit limit by this much using the Check Spending Power button. I'm so puzzled by this. Why do they approve me to go over.....but won't approve a permenant credit limit increase? Anyone with any experience with this?

That doesn't make much sense. Perhaps they think that allowing you the ability to finally go over your SPL is a CLI.

Maybe they're willing to approve a charge over your limit on a case by case basis, but since the amount you go over has to be repaid next month right away, maybe they're trying to say that they're more comfortable just doing that rather than increasing their exposure with you.

Amex is known to approve charges that go over your limit (based o your spending / payment pattern) but this does not necessarily mean cli, nor you are due for a cli.

It is akin to a temp CLI. Amex is testing how you handle the increased spending power before it increases the limits. This is a step in the right direction. I would go ahead and spend the additional amount and in your next payment, make sure to pay that part back and a bit extra, on the non charge- obv pay all on charge. After a little while it will increase the limits.
