strange... I use my two like double barrel shotgun, my last were 3k, 3.2k and they went through fine. but, it's been a couple months since I ran a large purchase. eh... I guess if they fraud alert the cards sometime I understand. it is their money. I will just use a Chase cardand call em' up after

I would say that it's really rare. And when it does happen, it can be quickly fixed. Happened to me recently for the first time, and I had several ways to confirm the charges and unrestrict the fraud trigger (e.g., text, email). I admit; I would be irritated that a clerk assumed my card was maxed, but it's not a big deal. I still have more confidence in my Capital One than any other card.

One thing I notice about Capital One is that your 2nd transaction will always be declined (if it's a new card.) They lock the account after your first transaction. That's my experience-- then you call in and verify you made the purchase. I have only had it happen when my cards have been new.

i remember a few years back, when I was with a friend of mine at Coach and something similar happened.. But it was even more convoluted.. The card was declined because it was miswritten/had wrong account info on the magnetic stripe.. ... Fortunately it was a Amex Plat.. Called CS on cellphone and CS had the clerk rerun it. and manually approved itt after conversing on the phone with them. Was inconvienent but the sales clerk and the cs person was very polite and professional about it.. And there was a card overnighted that day to replace it.

-J

IMO this happens when cards are new or CL's are new or during your honeymoon stage with a 'new-to-you- lender of any sort.

Ex: You said afterwards you whipped out your Discover and that made me kind of chuckle b/c the EXACT ssame thing happened to me

with Discover...

I had the card less than a year and gave it to the DW to get the grocery store but b/c I'd really never put more than very small token amounts on

the card it DECLINED on her at the counter (she was NOT happy being declined with a basket full of grocery) but luckily I had received a text alert

asking me to hit Y for yes if it was indeed a 'legit' purchase....so by the time she called me, then my daughter's phone (b/c she was with me) I had answered the text

(which is how I missed her call in the 1st place) the 'lock' was removed.....I could hear her sheepishly 'explaining' the the grocery clerk it was just a glitch b/c of the

'LARGE' amount

And, I'm thinking 'large amount' (just like the OP) what the crap it's a few 100 in freaking food the CL is huge...

but again if it's new or a LARGE jump away from your normal pattern, especially on a newer account....more than just Cap1 might double check.

Now my Cap1 nor my NFCU have never had that problem b/c they get more use other than the nickels and dimes put on my Discover up until that point...

never happened again, just the 1st decent size spend outside of penny annie usage, then you're usually fine.

Lenders just don't want to get caught holding the bag (no pun Prada 'get it') on a large 1st time purchase where a client might say 'you guys SHOULD have known,

that wasn't me'

a) I 'just' got the card or

b) You've NEVER seen ME spend 'that' kind of money

but once you have, it's all good

Thosands can go thru now and nobody's double checking a darn thing now...

And at least you got declined at Prada...the mother of my freaking kids was shut down at Ralph's freaking grocery store

That's what happens when you first get the card. After they learn about your spending habits that won't happen.

Many years ago I had a thriving auto parts company that I built from the ground up. I collected funds for a group buy to have a custom part made. One Friday morning I went to the company who was making the part for me and made the payment. My card had a limit so I called the card company and told them I needed to make a very large charge so they could clear it. The charge was for $31k dollars. They agreed and cleared the way for the charge. I ended up having to do several transactions (3 @ 10k and 1 for the 1k no tax) for reasons that escape me at the moment. I took the printed receipts and put them in my pocket so I would not lose them. I ran a few other errands but nothing requiring money.

Later that afternoon I ended up at The Blackeye Pea restaurant with my wife, 3 kids, mother, and a few others. We ate and had a good time. The waitress came by for payment and I handed her my card (because we all know this was a “business expense”, lol) The girl came back and in a loud snooty voice proclaimed my card was denied and asked if I was sure I made my payment and then flashed a grin that makes you want to smack a person so hard you knock a letter off their last name. This caught me off guard and was a first for me. I don't wear 3-piece suits by any means but my family isn't one of those you hear horror stories about that are loud and obnoxious and the service had thus far been exceptional. But, I remained calm. I said no, it cannot be that because I just spent $30K over at XYZ Company and laid the receipts out so she could see them. They guy at the table next to me said (holy *** and started laughing when I laid the receipts out) She was like “oh!” I told her it was probably a fraud hold and asked her to kindly give me a minute while I called the card company to clear it up. They released it and it went through. I left her a normal tip and a note saying she made me feel like Jed Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies, but to have a nice day anyway.

Same thing happened to me with my capital one card. I had it for years and barely used it. Decided to use it on a Saturday at the mall. By the 5th charge it was declined. Charges only came up to about $200 bucks. Called cap one, they said my spending pattern was unusual. No biggie but not cool to get declined.

That is kind of funny because Venture is our go to card for large purchases. It has my largest single spends on it. I don't think that I've ever put something like a coffee on it. Maybe that will trigger a fraud alert

I did have my QS1 decline after a lot of charges on the same day like credit cash, but they sent a text or email asking if it was me and when I replied I was able to continue on.

I had a similar issue last week. I just received my Venture in the mail on Friday April 8th - so of course I wanted to hit the ground running to earn the $40k bonus miles. So I made several purchases - plane tickets, tickets to Universal studios (for an upcoming family vaca), groceries, paid a medical bill online, paid a dental bill over the phone, etc. I spent approx $2k in the course of 24 hours. The next day I went to Lord & Taylor and when I tried to use my Venture card it was declined (the purchase was only $315 - my credit limit is $15k). I was horrified but I did have my Cap1 QS and was able to make my purchase but I really wanted to use my new Venture card.

The store clerk was very nice said I needed to call my bank - it may just be they want to verify it is me that is using the card. So I called Cap1 and was able to get the issue resolved but it was just really embarrassing. I guess it's good to know that they are monitoring my account. I haven't made any other large purchases - but I hope my card won't be declined when I do.

@Anonymous wrote:

Sort of embarrassing. Walked into Prada and my new Venture card declined the charge of 2400. I just spent 480 on groceries yesterday and I know I have a 20k limit. The Prada guy comes out and says, "maybe the card is maxed, do you have another card?" So shame I told him to wait while I call Capital One. Waited 5min or so, after, I was transferred to Fraud department. All I had to do was read back a text message code. The fraud rep stated, "it was declined because it's a big purchase." In the back of my head, I was thinking, you call this a big purchase. I felt shame and didn't want to bust out my PRG or another card because I had to meet the spend on the Venture card. Anyway, Capital One approved the charges but I wanted to know if this is normal. Every time I try to make a purchase, will I have to call capital one because the charges were declined? I should just announce everytime I spend 2k or more and give them a headsup call. grrrr. Why give such a high credit limit if I can't use it.

Anyone else experience your card being declined? Does it ever stop being declined (Future big purchases I mean)? Would love to hear your experiences.

*Edit*

After that, I went to Tory Burch and Coach and used my Discover because I didn't want to be shamed again. Lame if you ask me.

I know it is for fraud purposes, to protect the bank and me from hassle. If that was to happen, I have the app that shows a popup each time the card is used as well as the amount. (Wallet from Capital One) I can just lock the card via that app if I ever do see fraud.

All banks do that kind of thing. If you had a pattern of making big purchases like that the fraud alert would be less likely to be triggered.
