PenFed and Chase AARP have been goals since I started rebuilding. I eat out a LOT and a 3% dining card is a good fit for me.

I've been limiting my new cards to a bare minimum in prep for Chase once bk falls and scores are 700+. I left the garden to get Discover, according to plan, and one day later Marvel became avbl.

TBH I couldn't care less about superheroes. It could as easily be a bright pink Hello Kitty as far as I'm concerned.

Before heading back to the garden, I'm considering apping for the Marvel instead of Chase. I would wait until next reports with TU 700+.

It appears to me to be a better bang for the buck 3% dining card. Higher SL & CLI's through CS, no minimum redemption and greater # of qualified spend opportunities.

Am I missing something about Chase that I should know before I grab Marvel? It would be my 5/24 card.

Thanks!

The only advantage I see for AARP is that you can have a bit more flexibility with the rewards. You can save them, redeem for gift cards, etc. With marvel, even if you earned five cents, it's auto redeemed as a statement credit.

Assuming you don't care about that, the Marvel covers more categories, and Synchrony is more generous than Chase with CLIs for a lot of people.

Keep in mind you're already getting 5% or 10% on dining (not sure if you're in double rewards) with Discover, and either 1.5% or 2% on other purchases. A 3% nominal earn rate on dining probably doesn't actually boost your rewards much right now.

I would have to agree it's important to run the numbers and see what your actual gain would be in dollars from the 3 percent.

That said, AARP definitely has the better sign on bonus by far.

I would think Marvel may be easier to get.

I may have went for the Marvel if I didn't already have AARP. I do love that I got a sign up bonus with my AARP.

I agree with everything everyone has said. Great post.

What is the APR on the Marvel? I know it makes no difference if paid in full.

Also if you want Synchrony cards it might be good to try for Marvel. If you want Chase cards it might be good to try for AARP.

For me, I still prefer my Chase AARP card over that Marvel card, even at my young age. It mostly comes down to my significant and highly biased preference for Chase over Synchrony. I do have a few Synchrony cards with fairly high limits, but there seems to be a kind of emptiness with their cards that I don't really like. Additionally, entertainment is a category that I don't really need to have covered on a continual basis. Finally, I cannot deal with cartoons, superheroes, or pictures on my credit cards. If I ever decide to get a Disney credit card, it has to be the least interesting design available.

This one's pretty sleek-

Lets not forget the AARP has a 200 signup bonus at the moment which will take awhile to make up with the Marvel card.. Although Marvel card covers more overall imo.

By far Marvel is easier to get approved for and a TU pull though and bigger CLI chances.

This was a funny read because I wanted AARP last summer but got denied...

Now I'm happy with CSP + Freedom Unlimited and the Marvel card for later on.
