So as an example, since you said to pay it off in full monthly. I get paid weekly, and generally like to make my payment at the end of that week. Is that bad? Is it better to allow the month to add up and just pay it at the end of the month? And if so, does that mean I should just let all of my money sit in my bank account until its payment time?

I have a friend who gets paid weekly on Fridays and he pays off his cards every sunday night. Just one way of keeping up with the spending. Definitely no more debit card,as the other poster said. The more love you give to your cards, the more love you get back. After all any lender would like to see usage on their product. One more reason to keep the BCE open; down the road, if you apply for a better / higher end card from Amex, they will value your history with them just as much as your credit report if not more. So it is always good to have a foot in the door with them as it can easily lead you to better products sooner than you can think of. As for the CLI, use it for 61 days and ask for cli for $3K.

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums and fairly new to the credit building world. I was hoping to get some better explained information regarding American Express cards and some of my other credit cards. It's a lot to read I know, so I'll seperate it by category so you can just read what you need.

Some minor background on myself and my cards and score

I'm currently 22, I work full time and am currently in possesion of 3 Credit Cards and 1 on it way in the mail for a total of 4 accounts. I recently closed a card I had from Credit One bank as I didn't agree with their annual fee and preffered to keep my cards from well known creditors like Chase and Amex.

I starting out so my score isn't amazing or anything. I in the mid to high range 600s. I currently have a QuickSilver Credit card from Capital One that was recently upgraded as an offer from my Capital One Journey card. This was my first and oldest credit card. My 2nd Card was Credit one bank which is now closed. 3rd Card is a Best Buy Credit Card, and 4th is a Chase Freedom (Not unlimited new one).

My Experience with Amex so far

I've heard alot about Amex and how good and prestigous it is. Yesterday I decided to try applying for a card, since I am just starting out I didn't wanna get myself into any hefty annual fee's so starting with Blue Cash Everyday seemed like a good idea. For anyone who knows about this card, is it worth having? I was approved for the card but was not pleased with my credit line amount as my other cards were more generous. So I read about the harm in canceling a card right after opening and it is minimal to none. I contacted customer support and explained to them that I was interested in closing my card and account due to the limit. I know that might seem kinda childish or so, but I don't intend to have too many credit cards. I more or less want to have 3 credit cards with high limits for my uses, and 2 at most retail cards like best buy and another. So wasting one of my 3 slots on such a low card seemed like a bad idea. She insisted that I contact their credit line team to request an increase. When I explained to her that that would cause another hard inquiry on my account and for that I'd rather apply for another card from one of my current creditors, she said she understands completely but that in her experience she highly reccomends that I call them and that I might be able to receive the line im looking for.

My Question regarding my situation with Amex

So my main question aside from general advice with credit cards and all is, should I contact them and keep my Amex Blue Everyday Cash CC? Is it a good card? Is it worth having? Or should I just go ahead and close it? What benefits are there to the card, as well as my current cards? I am 100% new to all of this, I have my own understanding of how it all works, but learning more seems like a very smart move to better educate myself on the matter. I thank everyone in advance who takes the time out of their day to help a beginner out!

If anyone, in their response, seem to be a little hash, don't take it personal It is for our good and to be straight to the point. MAkes things easier. Now, one mistake you made is to apply for a credit card before you ask the questions or do a research about it, and now you want to close it. You said it is a low limit, but you did not mention your approval limit, and the limit you were expecting, and also the limit and the balance on your other cards and how long you had your other cards. These are all data points that creditors use when determining your approval, and your starting limit. BCE is a very good card. I got mine in Dec. and i love it. Amex is very generous when it comes to credit limit increases. You can use the card for 61 days and ask for cli on 61 day, up to your 3X initial limit. So if your approval was for $1000, you are likely to get a cli up to $3K in 2 months, and another 3X 6 months after that. So it is very likely to take a $1K card and increase your limit to $9K in just about 8 months. I would definitely keep the card, unless you are in to travel / hotel points and such; which in that case you applied for the wrong card to begin with. BCE will give you cash back that you can use towards statement credit. Let us know your approval amount and the limit / balance on your other cards you currently have, and we can help you further make a decision.

Welcome to the forum

Short and sweet answers:

The cards you want to grow and build are prime cards and now you have 2 Chase and Amex

Being young I assume you don't spend a lot on groceries and gas but you tell me your monthly spend?

You closed a card with an AF so I don't think you need any of those and BCE is a good card for someone with low grocery and gas spending

It has an excellent extended warranty and I assure you the limit will grow in fact probably higher than your Freedom and faster.

It has SP CLI request and in IMHO you should keep it and grow it long term

Hey, thanks for the quick response and for pointing out some mistakes. I won't take anything personal haha I'm here to learn. I've had my Journey card which has been converted to Quicksilver of 1500 since around March 2014. My Best buy Credit card of 2000 Limit since February 2015 and My Chase Freedom Card of 1200 Since March 2015. Capital one was increased from 500 to 1500 as well as best buy from 1000 to 2000 about a month and a half ago. Chase was given to me at 1200 and has remained at 1200 since I received it. My utilization for them is roughly 50% or less. I generally make large payments to clear my card as quickly as I can, however I am currently helping my mother take care of some debt so I havent been able to make a large payment in about 2 months now. But will soon resume being able to pay large amounts.

Amex BCE was approved for 1000, and why it irks me is cause my other cards were given to me with equal or greater value at lower scores, when I was in the low to mid 500s. Since then I've been doing my best to monitor my score weekly, and do whatever I can to take care of and maintain my score to improve it. So I feel I have made some reasonable progress and felt like getting 1000 as my limit still after making around a 150 point boost to my score since my last 1k aproval cards was disencouraging. I agree that I should have done more research, but I just saw it as any other credit card. So in my mind I just understood it as this. I was interested in Amex, I'll apply to one with no annual fee and use it as any other one of my credit cards. Pay for something with my card, and then go and pay it off when I get paid. Plain and simple, I generally don't make much use of my points and stuff. With capital one and chase I usually put my points as cash towards my balance anyway so I'm fine with that.

If there's anything more you need to know or that I missed feel free to ask. And thanks again!

Actually I think they treated you fairly. Usually prime lenders will stay in the range of your current cards, 150 points ago you wouldn't have been approved.
Give it some time and get some CLI's. It'll grow. Congrats on starting the credit journey!

Is it better to allow the month to add up and just pay it at the end of the month? And if so, does that mean I should just let all of my money sit in my bank account until its payment time?

Definitely keep it open. Even if you eventually sock drawer it for something else that better meets your rewards needs. That will be one extra line open added to your average age of accounts, which will help you score in the future.

I applies for the BCE and got an initial 1k limit also. Because amex only does a SP for CLI you can increase up to 3x after 61 days. Then you can increase again after 6 months. Mine's up to 15k, and could be increased again. I just haven't been bothered to do it yet.

For some general advice, you may want to re-read the items that make up your credit score. Closing cards (even perceived "bad" cards can hurt your AOA.

And good luck with your credit adventure!

Then go pay it off with the cash. That way you get the amex cash back rewards. The downside to this is if you're not disciplined with your money, you could end up spending more than you can afford. Just depends on your spending and tracking habits.

IF not i'll plan out what I need, charge it on one of my cards, and when I get my pay check, pay it off immediately. I don't know how bad or good that is? I guess I just feel, if I can pay for it, don't use someone else's money. Is that a bad mind set? Thanks!

The AF wasn't the biggest issue, so much that I wanted to keep my credit cards from bigger better known creditors. I'd rather see Chase then Credit One, I'd rather see Capital One, than seeing Milestone. I don't mean it to sound pretentious or anything, just personal preference. And as far as annual fee's, I don't know much about making use of your credit card benefits outside of just putting it towards balance payment. So I don't know how I feel about paying annual fee's and not taking advantage of what I'm paying for, because of this reason I tend to stick to No AF cards.

I am going to call Amex's Line increase line during my lunch break to explore the options the rep had suggested. Will post here to update within 2 hours!

Stop

Ignore the CSR and what they told you about a CLI =HP

I'll edit this post in a minute with more info

And stop using that debit card today Lol

Edit to add

Start using your BCE for gas and groceries that's what the card is designed for and no more debit card unless you need some cash

Change your mindset of using someone else's money this is what you want to do

Be rewarded for the use of a free loan in this cards sake 3% and pay off monthly in full

Just be sure not to over spend.....spend as normal that's it

Now I see nothing wrong with the limit they started you with and in fact it's in line with your others limits not counting BB which is a store card

Are you aware that in 61 days you can request a SP CLI on the card and if approved it then become your largest limit of all cards?

You haven't proven yourself with big banks yet and so don't expect large limits but if you manage Cap1, Chase and Amex good for a year the doors will open

I have to now grade you for your research on the product before you applied D-

All hope is not lost if you keep your emotions out of the equation and except the makeup paper due in 62 days

Haha, alright I'll give it a shot and try not using my debit card. So as an example, since you said to pay it off in full monthly. I get paid weekly, and generally like to make my payment at the end of that week. Is that bad? No this is not bad at all

If this is how you're comfortable paying your bills then by all means continue to do it this way

Is it better to allow the month to add up and just pay it at the end of the month? Optional but I think you mentioned carrying balances on other cards so treat this card as a debit card and pay it off ........or pay off all others and since this has a $0% period use the free money but DO NO GO INTO DEEP DEBT...have a plan

And if so, does that mean I should just let all of my money sit in my bank account until its payment time? If you have a interest bearing account why not let the money sit but again it all depends on what process you feel comfortable with as to when you pay your bills off

Some of us pay monthly others weeky, every 5 days,10 days......whatever works for you.

Then go pay it off with the cash. That way you get the amex cash back rewards. The downside to this is if you're not disciplined with your money, you could end up spending more than you can afford. Just depends on your spending and tracking habits.

Yeah I've been warned about that before and I believe I am disciplined in that sense. I don't like being in debt or the thought of drowning in debt. And If ever I am to buy something expensive (i.e- a TV) I plan ahead on what card I will charge it on and how much I'll save up before hand and all. Thank you!

Thank you for that lesson. I do have a 0% interest on it as you stated and I will start using it for regular purchases like grocery shopping, gas, lunch and small spoils. I don't intend to make any big purchases or get into crazy debt at all. And I will be able to pay off my other cards once I've finished helping my mother.
