Chip Technology Warning!!!

My friend took his family out to dinner and paid

his bill, gave credit card to server. All OK.

Went to use card next day, declined. He looked

at card, Chip was GONE!!! It was replaced with a

sticker that looked like a Chip!!! He just peeled off.

Lesson here: The Road to HELL is always paved with the best of

intentions. Murphy is alive and well; whatever can go wrong

will go wrong. The more variables for fraud prevention

in place also increases the amount of problems made possible.

Isn't that proof that the server tampered with his card?

I'd slap the server across the face with a glove.

Might be, but not necessarily. Server might have just swiped the card, and the chip could have been stolen before server ever even held it.

I don't think the chip can just "fall" out/off. It's not stuck on the outside of the card, at least mine aren't.

Looking at my cards it does seem possible that the chip could be removed...however it looks like it would be difficult to do quickly without destroying the chip or card in the process.

Anyone have a unused EMV card they would be willing to experiment with...for the sake of science of course.

I have a couple unused cards that I've got replacements on. I'm gonna try when I get home to see if there are different methods I could use to take them out.
They are my old warm out ones I've gotten replacements for. I think I have about 7.

Also looking at my Amex (clear plastic) the actual chip is embedded in the card and is much smaller ( smaller than a grain of rice) than what appears on the surface of the card. The shiny thing on the outside is used to link the chip with the reader.

This is why you should check your cards.

I have a habbit of polishing my cards. If a dirty waiter touches my card. I can't put it in my Louis Vuitton wallet without cleaning the oil off it. I looked at every inch and wipe it with a napkin. If it is bad, I place it in my pocket and go home and clean it with soap and water.

If I noticed that, all hell would break loose. "I would make a scene"

Anyone with a Amex product that's see thru can clearly see how it's constructed. No need to disect a card. It's embedded in the card. So the sticker would dip down in three hole or easily puncture if it was interesting in the hole of the old chip

Security is never about relying on one solution to solve all problems. It's about relying on a given solution to help mitigate specific concerns and security improves with layering but even then may not be 100%. Criminals are clever and will figure out ways to circumvent such measures. Stealing the chip isn't something I've heard of but if you look around you can find info on other avenues of getting around EMV. One always has to be vigilant.

I was at Lowes yesterday. Standing behind a lady with a CSP whose's chip fell out and her husband tried gluing it back on. What a hacked up job. It jammed the card terminal and had to be yanked out, then it had to be typed by the cashier who then needed an override.

Morale of story: Don't forget your Lowe's card at home so that you don't spend 5 minutes waiting for a 98 cent pack or razor blades. Funny about the chip though.
