Is it possible to get a new card with just a soft pull ?

Is it possible to get a new credit card now days and not take a hard pull? I'm guessing probably not but figured I would ask.

The only way I have heard of is to use the shopping cart trick but that will only get you a comenity card, barf.

Yes, search for "shopping cart trick". The commenity store cards are usually just a soft pull. I got Sportsman's Visa, Overstock, JCrew, Victoria's Secret and Eddie Bauer all with just soft pulls. I don't recommend doing that, though. If you can get the Sportsman's Guide Visa to come up (put their premium membership in your shopping cart first), that one is good because it is a visa, not just a store card. I had to put my whole social security number in, but it was a soft pull.

Thanks guys for the quick replys. What I was meaning to ask is it possible to get a bank credit card like chase or citi. Sorry I wasn't clear with my question.

My experience with soft pull cards is avoiding that HP inquiry to keep your credit score from dropping is the least of the worry. Once you accept a soft pull card your scores most likely will drop anyways for adding a new card and lowering your AAoA. If you want a good card you might as well just take the HP for it because as I said avoiding a hard pull is not really worth it to get a store card with a toy limit.

I maybe missing something about the benefit of a soft pull card. Maybe the decrease in util vs score drop from new account? will make up for possible point loss?

I agree that avoiding the hard pull is a lesser concern vs avoiding opening a new account altogether. If you really want a card just take the hard pull. The cards you can get "easily" without a hard pull are like that for a reason.

My Sam's Club MasterCard is the only credit card I have ever received from a SP. It was offered to me in the form of a preapproval at the customer service counter when I was signing up for a membership with them in 2015. There was no HP involved.

Dont forget NASA CU.... It is possible to get membership and CC via SP only..As Always YMMV

Dont apply for the CC without membership first, this will always end up being a HP from what I've read.

DW is a member...SP EX for membership and CC.

CC isnt that easy to get...Scores should be solid before trying. Membership was a bit of a pain...DL, utility bill etc..

Its a see saw. If you have a great score your inquiry number virtually ignored by many lenders. If inquiries is your denial reason, its a legit reason only because of many other factors lowering your score.

Those SP credit unions are great tho, but also a good idea to plan for the worst (hp) and see who they pull, using stragedy to apply for ones who use a bureau you look the best with. The other downside is they are dog slow, which some people hate to deal with. If you have a grip of inquriesyou probably have been pursuing instant gratification… who me?

For me it was very quick and easy and free to become a member.

But I got turned down for the credit card
