Any known method to not paying AMEX Platinum $450 AF?

CSR said it's on first statement while membership agreement says you don't pay it until the first use of card. Bottom line, I don't really want to pay it!

Just spitballing here....if you don't pay until you first use the card....one way would be not to use the card.

or call back and see if you can get another CSR to waive it.

The easiest way to do it is easy.... App for the ameriprise platinum, AF waived for the first year

It's a great card if you travel though.

Closing your account will result in the Annual Membership Fee being refunded in full assuming you still haven't used the card.

American Express does not waive Annual Membership Fees. The Cardmember Agreement detailing the fee was agreed upon submission of your application.

Paying the annual fee helps offset the cost Amex has when providing the card's benefits. If the benefits don't outweigh the cost for you, maybe you should find a
card that'd be a better fit.

toss some $ on the card and get enough mr to fly to paris via sfo and take in the centurion there, its very nice - enjoy paris, one of my fav places to hang out - return home. cancel the account, save the card as a memento. you just saved ~2/3 off an economy ticket.

ive read somewhere about someone meeting the spend in 2 mos time, getting the bonus and cancelling the card. he got a prorated AF refund. but a very possible drawback though, amex might blacklist you.

Yes, I have heard similar reports about the prorated AF refund. It's best to start this around December though (if possible) so you can snag two of the airline fee credits.

That is not a true statement. I just got a letter in the mail telling me that after further review of my account, Amex decided to go ahead and not charge the annual fee at this time and that I could rest assured that they would inform me when they planned to reinstate the annual fee on my account.

Then why did you app? Sort these things out before applying -- not after. AF isnt' the only consideration but it should be part of your consideration when looking at any card.

My guess as well but that's why you do your due diligence versus focusing on a single aspect of a card. Best OP can do at this point is try to maximize the value of the Platinum. Hit FlyerTalk, find the relevant airline credit thread for the airline that the OP can use and see if usage of the credit can be maximized. Also check out the FT thread on what to do with a new Platnium in order to get the most from it. Sign up for Global Entry and get the credit. However, if you're looking for value the Platinum is probably a poor choice. The Platinum is generally best suited to those who can benefit from the premium travel benefits that it offers.

Isn't that kinda like renting a Mercedes because you get $25.00 off your first day's rent (and you've always wanted to at least drive a Mercedes) and then telling the rental agengy you don't want to pay the $350.00 a day rental fee and then arguing that CSR said you pay before you drive it and the rental agreement says that your credit card will be charged upon return of vehicle? Doesn't matter one way or another - you are going to pay and pay big for the priviledge of driving that Mercedes. Even if you don't want to.

Your situation is way different. You upgraded your card. They will usually waive upgarded AF. If you are a new application they won't waive it. I haven't seen 1 waived AF for a new applicant.......especially for the 100k sign up bonus.

I was told that they do not waive AF's when I called about the $175 fee on my Gold card. This was on the second aniversary of my Gold card.

But they did offer a $50 credit immediatly and a $50 credit after spending $500 in 60 days. So, basically a refund of $100 for normal spend which is pretty good!

I also chatted in about getting a $8 in flight wi-fi fee taken care of with the $100 airline fee credit. I expect to get $8 back but to my surprise they gave me the entire $100 all at once! So received that and the second $50 credit today. Pretty good day so far.

So youll probably have the pay the AF the first time but on each anniversary you can call in and see what theyll offer.
