AMEX Auto-Upgraded my BLUE to EVERYDAY

I had a letter in the mail from AMEX, which i found unusual because I don't get any paper statements or notifications for my PR GOLD or BLUE cards and it didn't look like the usual invite to upgrade to PLATINUM. Upon opening it I got a pretty nice notice:

"Congratulations! Your Blue Card has been upgraded to the Amex Everyday Credit Card!"

In a nut shell...

- upgraded automatically on June 11th 2016

- card should be received within 10 days

- same account number, terms, payment due date, MR account/balance, credit line and APR.

I'm fairly confident that everyone and anyone that has the BLUE card will probably be receiving this notice in the next few weeks since the cards are nearly identical with the exception of the 2X Points at Supermarkets and the 20% point bonus after 20 purchases. There was really no benefit to apply for BLUE once EVERYDAY came out almost a year ago.

I'm surprised they've waited this long. I wonder if this means the original OBC's (old Blue Cash) will be converted to the Blue Cash Everyday as well. Though I feel the Everyday card (silver) is a crappy offering, IMHO of course. Depending on your remaining MR or if you find it valuable, it might be worth checking if they could convert you to the Blue Cash Everyday instead.

The OBC has a completely different reward structure to the BCE (and when the BCE came out, OBC holders were offered the chance to change. As the card was uncapped at that point, it made sense for certain spend levels to make the change).

Whereas, as the OP points out, there is nothing that the Blue does that the ED equals or exceeds. Apart from the 2x supermarkets, the points are full MRs, and can be transferred, whereas the Blue points were MREs.

I recall a post (maybe on FT) of someone getting converted several months ago (they thought it was the OBC being converted till they looked more closely) so it looks like Amex is spreading this out.

There was no additional benefit to me for it to be converted from BLUE to ED.. I use this card in the Extremely Rare case that I might have to roll over a balance for a very large purchase or an Extreme Emergency (and of course this was before I got my PLOC). BUT, I specifically app'd for the BLUE when I did for a few reasons:

1. I still wanted to get MR Points when I don't use my PR Gold (the points combine between the 2 cards)

2. I'm a major MR lover/user

3. ED was not out when I got it

4. I can care less about BCE (1 & 2 above lol)

I doubt they would be able to PC BLUE to BCE anyway because one is Cash Back and the other is MR Points. I believe ppl have tried w/o success.

Is the BLUE card you're referencing different from the BCE? I would hate if my BCE were to be upgraded to the Everyday.

It seems he's referring to Blue from American Express, not Blue Cash Everyday/Preferred, or the old Blue Cash, which are cash back cards. Blue from American Express gives Membership Rewards points, and the newish Everday cards pretty much cannibalize that product since you'd get more MR points and aren't limited on how you can redeem or transfer them.

Blue (the subject of the OP, which earns points)

Blue Cash (referred to by many as OBC)

Blue Cash Everyday

Blue Cash Preferred

Everyday

Everyday Preferred

(with the Blue Cash series, Everyday is a distinguisher from "Preferred". then they use them together in the newer cards).

And that's without Blue Sky and Blue Sky Preferred
