JCPenney Mastercard upgrade!

Well yesterday in the mail I received a letter informing me that I was selected for an upgrade to the JCPenney Mastercard. Really surprised me. It does say if I don't want the upgrade to call by July 17th. Now I just recently jumped in the garden so this essentially will be coming out of the garden since it'll report as a new account, right?

I believe so. I would do it if it was me, but that's me.

i would not have closed the account a couple of years ago had I known that it might upgrade

If it requires a HP then yes your gardening starts over. I don't believe a upgrade requires a HP with Synchrony bank. It looks as though this was auto done from what I could read in the letter.

Congrats..Since you didn't initiate it, I don't think it counts against gardening.

You could be right, but I think the rule says "No new accounts of any kind".

That might refer to the type of account rather than the the fact that it is new

Second, I wish this converted and kept the same account. It's too bad that one has to open a new tradeline for the upgrade.

I know it mentions about no new tradelines and this will be one, so it's a possibility that it will restart gardening, but since it wasn't iniiated, here's hoping it doesn't restart the clock for you. I wouldn't turn down the upgrade since it's a MC.

Congrats OP. To me if it was initiated on their end, in my own little world, that would not be stepping out of the garden. That is someone walking by and pouring water on it.

This is my main concerned since I heard Synch reports visa/mc upgrades as new tradelines. I'm hoping that since I didn't initiate it I get a pass for my gardening status

Just for reference, I opened this account back in June 2014 so it took two years for an upgrade. Used it a couple times at the beginning but not a whole lot. The most I put on it was like $87 an paid off days later. I haven't used it in about 6 months which reminds me that I need to charge something to keep it active so it doesn't get shut down for inactivity.

I'll see it as the neighbors dog handling his business in my front yard. You know hate it when that happens but can't hate the dog.

I'd opt out, and stick with the store card.

Maybe you'll get a higher CL with a MC, but in my book that's not a sufficient benefit to close an old account and open a new one. How likely are you to actually use the JC Penney MC outside the store when you have cards like the Sam's Club MC?

Since they went back to the older style incentives just occasional use of that MasterCard will add up the jcp rewards. I would agree that Sam's is the stronger card

Hi ,

Could someone state how many pointsdrop in your case after the old account was closed and the new one was reported?

There is just one day left on this to accept/decline and I am still unsure. I used the credit simulator on credit karma and it said if closing my oldest card, jcp 11 years, I would drop by 20 points!

I only have one other credit card that I would love to stop putting all purchases on and this upgrade would allow it. I do have a dell card also and that's it.

I would much appreciate it.

First , congrats on all your success, I know in the past when upgrades were offered, this did reset your garden clock, if you accepted, it is considered a new account.

Congrats!! I agree with RM, in my head at least, even though it is considered a new account, i wouldnt count it as stepping out of the garden as you didnt seek it, just think of it as an extended reward for being a Pennys customer who maintained their account well. I know downside is new account but upside is you can say you have a Pennys mc where not everyone can. Make it fun and go buy something in Sears or Macys, maybe theyll get jelly haha ! If you accept, enjoy!!

I didn't even know the JCP Mastercard was still available--there's no mention of it on the JCP CC application page.....
