I made a purchase on the Mac App Store and immediately got a text from Citi asking me if I'd made that size purchase on iTunes. Text 1 for yes, etc. Brilliant. It was probably larger than the average iTunes charge, so I can see them wanting to check against fraud. And HOW easy was that! I'd happily text back 1 to any charge that a lender feels is iffy.

Something similar happened to me with Chase. I was moving across country during the Freedom 5% gas category. Between a Pense truck and a car, each stop was quite a bit of gas. I was moving from south FL, and the first time we refueled after getting out of state, the authorization declined at the pump and I instantly received the same sort of text from Chase. After replying, they sent a thank you reply telling me to reattempt my transaction...no issues the remainder of the trip!

Similar props to CapOne. I get instant emails from them for "generous" tips at restaurants and repeated charges (same charge amount twice in a row at the same location). I really appreciate this from them. I even like the wording in their emails! At the bottom of the email alert is an inline survey where you can provide feedback if you like the alert service. I always click on "Absolutely" because I want them to keep it up!

Yep, Amex had been doing this for years. Nice, quick, and simple. And if I don't respond to the text I get a phone call right away.

Citi, on the other hand, allowed two purchases made in Poland for a Polish resort vacation to go through. I would have thought that two back to back overseas purchases made at the same place for the exact same amount would have triggered some type of fraud alert. Nope. But, thanks to MyFico, I was made aware of the charges fairly quickly. To Citi's credit, they were quick to credit my account and get me a new card.

I like this text thing. It's so much better than a phone call since I generally do not answer numbers especially toll free numbers that I do not recognize or do not identify. The text is great. Wish all CC's would do that.

I've received fraud prevention texts from Cap1, Discover and AMEX. I absolutely love it. The one time I didn't receive a fraud alert from Cap1, I did receive the purchase authorization alert. I immediately knew it was fraud and called it in. By the time the criminal attempted to use the card again, it had been shut down.

Unfortunately, I've been a potential victim a number of times. But the actual impact has been minimal.

Citi definitely gets an A+ checking for fraud. Next in line would be Barclay's. I had to jump through some hoops for my HD & TYP cards, but it was well worth it.
