First major major major purchase

The mac pro is going to be updated tomorrow. Thats about 10-15k give or take. I checked how much over i can over my limit on my everyday and its about 13 and a half k. lol.

Wish me luck as to it doesn't ring bells. im paying this in full obviously. this is my first major major major purchase, i'm a little scared. its about 70% of my income.

but this computer will last me 15 years so......

Congrats on your upcoming purchase. I absolutely love my Mac Pro. Its almost a year old... but from the cost you mentioned, my machine is certainly a lot more stock than what you're getting. I take it that you're customizing quite a bit? Congrats again and you're going to LOVE the Mac Pro!

Huh 10k-15k for one computer? Or is this for multiple.. That simply doesn't make sense on the price you are mentioning. Using a MacBook Pro now, granted not a mac pro, but no where near that price and it is brand new..

Also wouldnt count as someone else stated it to last you anywhere near 15 years and still be useable.. I would say 5 years of use you are doing pretty good if it is still good for that amount of time.. I typically expect a computer life cycle to be around 3ish years for me personally, but work in IT

What do you plan to do with your purchase? At $15k, even if you keep it for 15 years, that's $1k per year. That's one new "normal" laptop every single year. Plus 15 years from now it will be extremely outdated. Seems extremely wasteful. But hey, who am I to judge, it is your money.

guy im a editor. its going to be a 32 core mac pro with 64gb of vram. if they do the update it how we know they should, it will just be whatever the latest 12 core and vram is. If they do not update i am going to be very very mad. This will be my power house for 15 years, and then be completely overkill for my kids when they get into film

In 2001, a Powerbook G4 was the newest machine, that was 15 years ago...you'd still be using this up until tomorrow.. lol Buy what you want, but it won't be in use in 2031... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Macintosh_models#2000s

+1 Buy what you want...no need to justify it here to anyone. As for the commenter above about not using machines for long period of times... I disagree. Right side my Mac Pro is my '06 Intel iMac that I still have lots of use for and honestly, I still kick around from time to time with my old '99 Blueberry iMac, '93 Centris 610, and my '96 PowerMac 9600. Yes, I'm a Mac hoarder!

You are correct about choice.

For me aside from some misplaced bragging rights, a $15,000 Macbook Pro would be a crazy waste of resources.

For you, if it will help you with your trade, more power to you!

At the current rate technology is advancing, 15 years.......

Wow I can't imagine spending that kind of money on one computer.

$15,000?! Everyone thought I was crazy for buying the biggest, most expensive one at the Apple Store (15 inch retina) for $2600... And that's including tax!! I use HP and Dell computers in my offices though since I use XL for work. Hope it lasts you 30 years

I was thinking of the getting the Mac Pro also, it's a great design, I love the thermal core design. However I am waiting until Apple updates the processor in the Pro, I believe it's still Ivy Bridge generation which is 3 generations behind? Not exactly sure.

Back in 2004, I remember customizing a computer with AMD Athlon 64 3400 single core, 256GB Radeon X800 video card, 2x512MB RAM, 2x 74GB 10k RPM HDDs for about 3k.

It lasted about 8-9 years and was quickly outdated well before then.

In OP's case, his 32 core and 64GB VRAM is extremely powerful and wll still be above standard in 15 years and beyond.

Most people aren't using computers for video editing and rendering, so they don't need the extra processing power.

However, purchasing powerful technology when it is still in its infancy is very costly until competitors catch up.

Remember when memory sticks or device memory for phones/cameras would cost a lot of money?
