Was happy with Chase until...

So, mint notified me that I was charged a $10 transaction fee by Chase on my not even a month old Chase Sapphire Preferred. Could some please explain to me what this is? And why Chase does it? I checked my online account and sure enough it says transaction fee. I did not do a cash advance or balance transfer and balance was paid in full.

Hard for us to know! Look in your online Chase account. Does the fee show there (sometimes Mint misclassifies things)? If so, it should give some indication what it is for. Examples might be cash advance, balance transfer etc

@Longtimelurker Isis check my Chase account and it says transaction fee with the amount of $10. I didn't do a cash advance or balance transfer and I paid the first month's balance in full.

Is the date of the fee associated with any particular purchase? But sounds like you have to phone Chase for an explanation

lol. No. Not good... A $10 hit could turn into a $100 hit to a $1000 and so on. I speak from personal experience.

I call the exec branch whenever, to start out. I rarely have to call. If it is just a fraud, card blocked thing, overseas is fine.

So, according to the rep, it was because my authorized user's utility company ran the transaction as a cash transaction...I Paid my utilities a week before. her and it went through without a hitch. Out freaking standing city of Tallahassee smh

A cash advance isn't just money taken out of an ATM. Cash advances can also apply when you use your card to fund a new checking account, transfer money to a prepaid card, or as overdraft protection.

It's many utility companies. Not sure why they just can't charge your card and bite the fee like everyone else does.

National Grid where I live (NY) is the type of company that likes to go through Western Union to process cards, and they're the only ones around here that do that.

Because, they don't have to as in most cases consumers have no other choice of utility!

Is the OP also going to get charged interest because this is considered a cash advance?

Duke energy does this garbage as well here in the NC/SC area.

They have to make it an ordeal with Western Union... I just pay via bank transfer but I really dont know why they cant just accept credit cards. Its not like they are hurting for money. I know the electric rate is highly regulated because it is a monopoly but I guess some monopolistic things are just unavoidable.

Same thing here in STL MO....The charge isn't that high though sounds like they charged a percentage based off the amount of the payment...Our credit union charges $10 to pay our car loans with a debit/credit card...Discover processes as a cash advance on top of the bank fee I just like using one card for all the bills...Let's me manage better

OP I would definitely talk to the AU about checking any use thoroughly for extra fees...It defeats any reward.
