Since the RedCard ended up being mentioned. If you are looking for discounts at a specific store the RedCard debit card is an awesome option for the 5% off, the money will come out of your checking and applying for the debit version does not check credit.

I have the debit version and would not bother getting the credit version because u get the same benefits with the debit version.

As for the interest rate on any store card it is high, however if you pay in full store cards can offer some awesome discounts for specific stores, that far out weight the interest rate.

You should always PIF regardless of interest rate to avoid getting into debt, unless you are on a 0% rate and you are certain you can get it paid off in time.

Easy store card approvals?

I know this is a LONG shot but it doesn't hurt to ask. I am in the process of rebuilding and I am trying to see about adding a store card to my file. My scores are 540 (TU being the highest), 503, and 500. I have a secured Cap 1 card as well as a Fingerhut account. I figured I MAY have a shot if I could find a store that pulls only TU but I think that's rarely done. Should I just apply for another secured card? Any advice would be appreciated!

OP, with applying for any card there is more than just the score that is taken into consideration. I have seen people with low scores get approved for cards that just dumbfounded me. They look at multiple factors and each company algorythims take what factors they look at and come up with an internal response to it. For us to really make an educated guess on this we would need to know what is currently in your report

- total limits

- total balance

- aaoa

- what negatives are in your report

- when was the last negative

there are more but those would be the main information needed

synchrony pulls TU exclusivly although I'm not sure if your score is high enough for any of those cards. I'd very much consider a secured card as a third card and work on whatever it is keeping your score down. I also wouldn't open any store accounts for the sake of opening them, I opened quite a few when I started rebuilding and all but two(amazon & jcrew) have been closed or at least upgraded to Visa/MC versions.

I'm rebuilding too & I tried my luck at the shopping cart trick for a few store cards. I know there is debate about doing this but, to me, it makes sense for rebuilding purposes. My scores have only increased since opening the cards in Feb and letting the positive history just build. Search shopping cart trick or SCT and you'll get tons of information, including the process. If it works for you, it's a no HP pre-approval. Do NOT go crazy opening them though. Open 2 at most, if you get the pre-approval pop up. Victoria's Secret seems to be one of the easiest to get to work.

OP, in your case with the scores you have I would not apply for any store cards. I think the possibility of denial is too high, and will only drop your scores further. The shopping cart trick is another story, if you are able to get it to work for you.

With interest rates in the 20's, high fees, and only a measley 5% discount at Target, the RED card is the typical worthless store card.

I would stick with a secured card that can be unsecured and grow with you.
