Tricky credit card frauds I've recently heard of

When you use a cc to pay the bill at that fancy resteraunt, there are a lot of ways the resteraunt can easily commit fraud. Say you leave your tip on the table and the bill is 23.80 and you leave 5.00 cash on the table. After getting the ticket, you write 23.80, leave tip field blank, and write 23.80 total. The waitress writes 5.00 in the tip field and changes 23.80 total to 28.80 by closing the open ends of the 3. Another really clever trick is to run a charge which gets approved, but the waitress brings back the card and says it was declined or that network was down,and asks if you have another card. She runs a charge through the second card and brings you the slip for the first card which you sign. She then can forge the signature on the slip for the second card. When you see the charge on the first card, you dispute it because you were told it was declined, when you get a copy of the signature after investigation it may be too late to dispute the second card which actually has fraudulant signature. Always enter a 0 with a line through it if leaving tip on table. If card is declined, always call cc issuer before handing over second card to find out why if you are no where near limit and not late paying. These tricks are becoming well known. If possible keep an eye on the card while it is in the resteraunt.

Never leave a cash tip and the second one I can't see ever working because if my card was declined I would call them right at the table I know it shouldn't be declined and second if network was down another card wouldn't matter. Also, most fraud at restaurants is by Waite staff using skimmers to get cc data.

Also, the restaurant wouldn't want to commit fraud because losing it's merchant account would be the kiss of death. Management balances cash and credit card tickets so the employee would be caught that night.

Fraud can happen at any restaurant.

I actually had the experience of wait staff charging one or two extra bucks as tip than what I had written. I didn't find out about it until later nor did I make a fuss about it because it was only a couple of dollars but I did leave a review mentioning this incident to make certain future customers are warned.

If I'm paying the bill on my card but leaving a cash tip on the table. I never leave the tip field blank. I always draw a line on the tip field so nothing can be written in it. Maybe I should write a 0 and then a line on it, but I guess it doesn't matter lol. Also, after writing the total etc. I always put a long line before and after the amount digits just so no one can add any numbers Infront or behind what I wrote. Sometimes I'll go to dinner with friends and they always think I'm ocd or overdoing it, but these are the exact reasons why I always take extra precaution. I also believe by doing this its less likely a wait staff will try to adjust anything since the lines you wrote makes it very hard to clearly add any extra numbers.

None of this is particularly new. Fraud with credit cards at restaurants and other retailers has happened since credit cards came into use.

Side note. I was in a few countries in southern Africa a few years back. All of the restaurants there have wireless card terminals that they bring to your table. You never let your card out of sight while in Africa, way too much fraud can happen there.

It's pretty sad that even a third world country like Africa is more advanced than the United States when it comes to card technology.

If I leave a cash tip, in the "tip" field I always make a big 0 with a line thur it, and off to the side I write.."cash tip given"....(I take no chances).

I just starting leaving tips on CC's after advice from the myfico community. Its worked out well.

And for ages, even with debit cards, I have always written in the tip, total, and by my signature write in the total again with it circled.

What is really funny is how picky people get with splitting bills this day and age. Sorry, but your smartphone has a calculator. Unless the wait staff offers to split the bill, its not that hard to do it yourself, and hand the cards and say divide the total evenl.....unless theres a big difference, write each amount and the persons name. Easy!

Of course I always prefer now to use my card for the whole bill and tip, and get reimbursed by cash or paypal from friends/family. (after using a coupon or restaurant.com certificate or something first of course!)

Applebees is pretty advanced, they have terminals at the table, I found it awesome the waitress slid the card in front of me handed me the screen to sign and add tip electronicaly.

I get a text alert whenever my card is charged, so I would know if my card went through or not. (The exception being my Marvel card.)

Sadly it's still not advanced technology unless it uses EMV and contactless payment methods.

I think most people would be fine with pay at the table regardless of what it uses. In fact, given the current bad terminal programming among retailers, swipe might actually be preferred right now by some.

Personally I haven't run into any tip fraud but I suppose it's possible that a small enough amount has gotten added on once or twice such that I wouldn't notice.

I had fraud with the tip line once. It was on a debit card, so I noticed quickly. The tip amount was higher than I'd written. The manager did not care that the sum was too low on the total line and said I must have written the higher tip and done my math wrong. He said they do not have to charge my card according to my poor math. (My math skills are excellent) The bank was no help either, because the paper receipt I signed showed the high tip despite the total amount I had written being different from the amount charged.

Just wondering, what's the point of using your card for the food only and leaving a cash tip?

Why not add the tip with your card and write the total?

I round up to the nearest dollar so that there are no cents in the total charge.

Cash tip is end of the day/night pocket money for the server, usually, while if tip is paid with a CC they'll have to wait for it in their biweekly paycheck.

Also, cash tips may not be taxable because there may not be any proof of such income for the server, while CC tip would be documented and have to be included in income tax.
