@CreditUnionFan wrote:

Chase limits applying for ANY credit cards, not just theirs, when they apply the 5/24 restriction. So, those department store cards that might've tempted you with an easy 10% discount now result in an automatically denied application for the card. (and of course no bonus). My understanding about Chase's terms for bonuses are that you cannot have received the bonus for two years prior. So if I have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, cancel it at the end of the first year, in another year (as long as I'm still under 5/24 for new accounts) I can reapply just past the two years from the initial application.

With the new Citibank two-year condition, you can still get the card. You won't get the lucrative sign-on bonus/incentive within the same card family. So if you picked up a Thank You point card like the Preferred or Premier, you won't earn the bonus for the Prestige, because they're all in the same family. You can still apply for the card if you really want it, but you'd pass up on bonuses that the other cards in the family didn't offer. (e.g. Global Entry is only available on the Prestige, not with the other TYP cards) Additionally, the two-year clock starts when you apply for the card, but then will reset to the closure date if you close a card within the family.

Drat, they figured out my plan to try to convert my Hilton Visa to a Double Cash. If the two years didn't reset at account closure, I would've done without a Hilton Visa for a year.

I also now have to make the decision whether I want the Prestige before August 28th. I wanted to garden for a while...

Yea its worth noting that a product change does count as an account closure in Citi's eyes, which resets the clock. Its almost like there is more incentive now to signup get the bonus and then close the card as soon as bonus posts to start the two year clock running, unless you are going to keep the card for two years. .

Both the old and new terms say the same thing in regards to the 24 month rule? i could be reading it wrong, long day lol. looks like they lowered their sign up bonus and increased the spend, but i feel like something isnt clicking for me?

edit; i get it, they are expanding their cards under that rule. took me a minute lol

They have limited their bonuses per 24 months opened or closed to co-branded accounts. If you want to apply under the old rules, August 28, 2016 is the last chance

I wish Chase did this instead of their 5/24 rule.

They do. Chase limits their bonuses to once every 2 years as well. The 5/24 is in addition.

The difference is that Chase doesn't reset the clock if you close a card or product change it. Citi does.

I was willing to do so to take advantage of the benefits, but now what citi is telling me if I spend the money to keep their card for another year it will be at least three years before I can get the TY point signup bonus again. Maybe I should close all my citi TY points cards and just let the clock reset? The prestige card still has value to me, but after the next year its no longer worth keeping in my wallet because I like the AA lounge access, so I will be closing it a year from now which would reset the clock for all TY cards. It seems the new citi policy is having the exact opposite effect with me. I am someone who was going to pay to keep their card, but with this move it is encouraging me to cancel now and not pay.

My wife recently was approved for the Citi Costco Visa and also has the Citi Sears MC. If she was going to go for one of these bonus cards prior to the 28th what would be a recc. Spend 10-20 nights per year in hotels and fly 3-4 X per year usually one trip overseas. Citi does not like me so I won't even bother.

If she is staying four nights in a row when she does hotel stays then the prestige benefit may be useful. Prestige can also be good for lounge access. If she stays at Hilton then maybe the reserve card for the two free nights and gold status for her other stays if she isn't making status otherwise. If she flies AA and checks baggage than maybe one of the AA cards will be worthwhile. Otherwise look at the current signup offers and see what is good right now.Given the new rules I'd wait until there are higher than average signup offers in a specific family of cards

I was thinking about this today these changes actually could have really jammed me up recently. I had a Citi AA card which is a year old. Since I have the biz version as well I was going to close the personal card if there was no retention offer and then I was going to apply for the citi exec next year. I called in and there was no offer on the account, so I hung up and thought about it. Then I called back to cancel and they offered me a statement credit after $95 spend. I decided to keep the card. A few days later these changes were announced. If I had closed that AA card then I would be shut out of all AA cards for at least the next two years, so I am really lucky I decided to stay with the card even though I don't have a real need for it.
