AMEX Green PC to a No-Fee card

So, AMEX Green is pretty much worthless to me now. I have since moved on from the Platinum card to the Citi Prestige and now the Chase Reserve. I PC'd from the Platinum to the Green card. But now since I'm not using the card anymore, I'm pretty much just paying the annual fee for not using it. The caveat is that it is one of my oldest cards. Talking to the CSR, there is no other card to PC too. But I do have the AMEX SPG and Blue Cash preferred. But I got those in the last two years. Am I just stuck? Said that AMEX doesn't have a no-fee charge card.

Yes, there are not free charge cards. There were some cheaper "Senior" cards that didn't earn rewards but not sure that they are available to PC anymore. So, just close it if the fee exceeds usefulness. (If you have any MRs, redeem them or consider getting the free Amex ED before closing)

You're suggesting that the AoA isn't worth the annual fee? I've been a charge card member since '09. Just got the SPG a few years ago and the BCP this year. I don't need the apply for the ED since I already have two other Amex cards with bennies that are worth those fees. I would like to get rid of the Green Card.

I was going to get rid of the SPG card as well, but beacuase of the SPG/Marriott merger, I got Gold status with Marriott. So, I think I'll keep that around for now.

Personally, I wouldn't pay much of an AF to keep AAoA. Closing it won't change the AAoA for about 10 years, but even if it did, I would still be reluctant. The real question is "What is X points of credit score worth?" and that's sort of hard to answer, but I'm pretty sure that AF for the green exceeds it!

Senior cards did in fact have the option to earn rewards, if one wanted to pay more for that option, but still less than the regular AF. Senior cards are no longer available at all, for PC or application.

For the OP, if it's useless by your own defintion, then close it. It will still show on your credit report for 10 years.

So closing your Amex Green Card today will NOT affect your AAoA.
It will be on your report for 10 years.

IN 10 years, when it drops off, it could then affect your AAoA, BUT you have to consider all your other cards are also 10 years older by that point.. so does it really matter if the Amex falls off?

The Amex Essentials card recently hit in Canada and might make its way here to the US. Or it might not. The Essentials is like a revamped Zync offering low interest, basic rewards, and no annual fee. It's part of the charge card product line, so if it did hit the US you'd stand a good chance at being able to PC to it.

I have the Senior Green that has the $35 renewal fee due next month. If I didn't have this particularly low fee, I would also cancel it at this point. My justification is that I "make it work" for me in the tune of Amex Offers. I usually make out very well with them & since my other two cards (BCE & Serve) carries no fees, I can tag to offers to use repeatedly.

The only point I can see to having the Green card is for the 25k sign up points. After that you might as well just use the PRG as you have same annual fee after the travel credit. Plus the PRG has a lot more points earning potential.

I recall you had a bad time using Amex Platinum in Spain, and presumably want nothing more to do with Platinum.

For people who like their experience with Platinum, but just don't see themselves using the perks/credits for a while, Green can be a good way to have a card "hibernate". No need to worry about new accounts, getting a new card number, or Amex changing their underwriting standards for new accounts. Yes, there's still an AF...but there are also occasional offers.

Definitely not saying this approach is for everyone.

I knew someone was going to say that lol, and yes, i love your approach and that's why i downgraded from Platinum, that bad experience in Spain I guess i can just wait until one day i get an offer to upgrade...you have good memory!

So far, i've used $75 on offers with AMEX on things i would actually spend money on, so i guess that helps.
