Capital One Venture One CLI Help!

My wife and I have a Capital One Venture One, she added me as an AU. She was upgraded a week ago from a Platinum which she had for 4 years. Her credit limit was $3500 when they upgraded her. The day after upgrade, she requested a CLI as she had never requested one in the 3-4 years before. Online they approved $4k limit...only $500 more. Her balance was $600 on the Platinum which transferred to the V1. This was her ONLY CC.

The same day she app'd for Cap One QS as she was pre-qualified online. Approved for $3k.

One day later she app'd for Discover IT as she was pre-qualified online. Approved for $1k.

We just purchased tickets for $2300 using the Cap1 V1 which brings her balance to $2,900/$4,000. This was done for the points as this is an airline rewards card.

We will be paying it down to 1-9 % before the next billing cycle hits.

Should she call in after that to request a CLI on the phone? Or when can she CLI again since she was only given a $500 increase online?

Capital One, generally speaking, entertains requested CLIs 6 months after the most recent CLI so if it's been 6 months, ask away. Otherwise they'll probably say there was a recent change to the limit on the card and deny the request.

Thanks for the info! I'm assuming she shouldn't app for any more credit as her app's steadily went down in CC Limits as she app'd from $4k to $3k to $1k? Or would she benefit from trying a different card?

Each of those card the wife has been approved for will grow. Capital One likes to see a lot of useage and large payments, they will reward you. Discover, people has been on the CLI train for some time now. They have grew their cards to nice limits.

I'll be corrected if I'm mistaken but I believe Discover will entertain a CLI request after 61 days (but it may be 91 days).

She can request a CLI on the QuickSilver (the new card) after 91 days, then after that it's 6 months after any increase. New Cap One accounts can get one a little quicker though.

Yes, except the Discover. There is lots of info about people getting CLIs from them every 31 days. Since they gave her a low SL, they may not grant CLIs right away, but it won't hurt to ask!

Having 3 cards now will help boost her profile too. Once all those cards report if she keeps the reporting balance low and only lets one card report a balance she will get a nice FICO bonus.

MugenCivicSi83, I suspect your wife will see Capital One respond positively to the ticket purchase... they like big swipes!

As others have mentioned, CLIs with Capital One are usually limited to every six months, but that will come around before you know it. Also, in six months you wife might consider getting a PC to a Quicksilver, since your rewards rate would be higher.

Keep in mind that the Venture One doesn't give you actual "miles", it's rewards are really just equivalent to 1.25% cash back that has restricted redemptions, but with the Quicksilver you get 1.5% cash back that can be used for anything.

My own Discover has grown quickly, but my CLIs seem to be in 90 day intervals (91 days to be precise). Some are able to get CLIs with them every 30 or 60 days, though, so you might just have to try and see how it works for you. The higher your score gets, the more response you'll see from Discover, and they can be sensitive to usage as well (as in, high usage tends to help with CLIs).

This might not apply to your situation, but I'll add that in my own experience Capital One doesn't count balance transfers as usage, so there's no "loophole" there. It's unclear if Discover does or not... I did get a generous CLI after paying off a $3k BT, but I might have gotten the same CLI anyway.

dangit! she has a Cap 1 QS....my post noted that she just app'd for QS and was approved for $3k the day after her upgrade to Venture One. should she have used that card for the plane ticket purchase? She has both cards. V1 and QS and Discover IT too.

That's OK... if you're playing the "long game" you actually did the right thing, IMO.

While the rewards would have been a little higher on the new QS, by putting the usage through the Venture One you'll likely do better come CLI time, then you can have it PC'd to a QS as well.

Capital One's marketing of the Venture and Venture One rewards as "miles" has tripped up quite a few folks (it is quite confusing).
