Capital One Debit Card Payment Online

So, I login to pay my Capital One credit card and I notice they have an option to pay the card using a debit card. This is the first time I've seen this appear online. I know they had the option where you can call and they would accept a debit card payment over the phone, but not online. I think it is pretty cool. My debit card reflected the payment automatically and capital one updated the balance next day.

I really hope other lenders will start accepting debit cards online.

I don't see that option on my end, both webpage and mobile app. Also, the FAQ specifically states they don't accept debit cards. Got a screen shot? Perhaps something new being tested? It would help with some of these CU's that require some amount of debit card usage.

I just checked, and the only payment option I have is a bank checking account; my FAQ also states that payment by debit card isn't available online.

Perhaps they are rolling this out only to select customers?

I don't have that option either, would be nice since I get rewards for my debit card purchases too.

You have always been able to call and make a payment with your debit card, but I have not seen the online option yet.

Yep I just checked, and I went in to make a payment and hit edit on bank info and there it was to add a debit card

THe pay with debit card option is in beta, call and ask Cap One about it, not everyone is getting the option to use it yet. It's been there from what I know about 5 months now

I probably won't use it (unless I put some money in Paypal and use the Paypal Business Debit MasterCard for the sweet, sweet cash back) but it is cool to see additional payment options. I wonder if this will help people with limited banking to pay their bills.

I do wonder, though... didn't Paypal tweak their TOS a little while back so that PIN-less debit transactions no longer earn the 1% cash back? I think I recall reading something (somewhere) to that effect... they were (supposedly) changing it so that only transactions that go over the MasterCard credit card network (i.e. "signature transactions") earned cash back.

If this works, though, I will be jealous of those who have the option!

I think they did, but that doesn't necessarily mean it wouldn't work (as is true about a lot of these types of things - sometimes there's a shocking realization that something is or is not counting as points/cash earning, like how some people pay rent or their mortgage with plastiq and sometimes it codes as cash advance (there was a Visa fiasco going on recently) but most of the time it does not).

I'm grandfathered into the OLD Paypal Business Debit MasterCard, so if it DOES happen to work it's 1.5% cash back. That is the benefit of being a very, very early adopter, hahaha. I just got finished getting a new card in the mail, every 2 years in October like clockwork for a good decade or more now. Heh. I suppose if I see the debit card option pop I could give it a shot.

But I think this comment is probably toeing the line a bit as to what is appropriate and what isn't on this board so I'll shut up now. Hahaha.

**EDITED** Well... that stopped the excitement before it began. I did a little googling and found a thread on Reddit talking about how Cap One won't accept the PayPal Business Debit MasterCard as a debit card option on their site. Heh. Course, the comment is over a year old at this point, but I don't have the option on my account to try anyway so I can't confirm, it just looks like it's a no-go.

Nah, you're cool... as long as we don't talk about breaking the rules we're OK; what you are describing is within the rules... just a (possibly) unintended loophole.

I got my Paypal debit in the early 2000s, but it was shortly after the change to 1% so I missed out on that. Before I had my credit cards I used my PP debit for nearly everything, and even at 1% it adds up if you use it consistently. It wasn't ideal, but it was better than using my own bank's debit (no rewards at all).

You're also right about how sometimes you just have to try... it's that way with using the Sam's Club MasterCard at Kroger fuel stations. Sam's Club specifically excludes Kroger in their fine print (not supposed to earn the 5% cash back), but I've found that in practice it does earn the 5% cash back when used there. It's not underhanded to take advantage of this, since I'm not doing anything to skirt around the rules... the 'glitch' is on their side.

My fingers are crossed that the Paypal debit 'solution' works for you!

There are some positives to paying with debt I guess, but I don't see the difference between using electronic payment over debit, of course if you get cash back or points it is a plus. If you're someone without a traditional checking account or a debit pay card it can make paying easier. Anything that makes life and bill paying easier is a plus, if you can get rewards on top of that it's icing on the cake.

People with a grandfathered Paypal debit earn 1.5% on signature transactions (that go over the MasterCard network); all others earn 1% cash back.

If Capital One processes a payment via debit card over the MC network it would effectively make a Quicksilver into a 3% card for someone with a grandfathered PP debit, and a 2.5% card for all others (that's the QS rewards rate of 1.5% + the 1.5% or 1% rewards from making the payment). There's a lot of "if's" in there, but it could (possibly) be lucrative for the right person/people.

I suspect someone at Capital One has thought of this, though, and has made sure all the transactions are run as PIN-less debit, which won't earn cash back with Paypal debit... unless there's a glitch that lets it fall though the cracks... that's what we're speculating about.

I admit it's not likely to work out in our favor, but it's at least worth exploring for those who are part of the rollout with Capital One (i.e. can pay with debit) and those with a Paypal debit card, especially a grandfathered one.
