Discover Q1 2017 announced

Discover will be doing gas, ground transport, and wholesale clubs for the first quarter of 2017.

Apparently some originality is just too much to ask for; this is just more of the same old stuff. Not bad categories, mind you, but just meh. I will get some use out of them, but just was hoping they'd come along with something different for once.

I actually don't mind those categories. 5% back on gas is better than most other gas offers. Do the wholesale clubs include BJs? If so, I'll make out well as I spend about $1000/quarter at BJs and I'm still in my first year (double CB) so I'll enjoy 10% back. What exactly does ground transport constitute?

I guess I look at it differently, I got discover because I liked the categories they had at the time, so for me, not having "originality" is a good thing

This isn't shocking. Those categories are designed to get people used to swiping that card..Almost everyone uses gas or transportation.

This why I closed my Discover, it's only up to $1,500 plus you have to watch a calender and 1 point for everything else.

I do better with CSR, Ink, FU (combo) and EDP.

Blah IMO.. Gas I spend about 40 a month on.. Others no real interest possibly ground transport for another 30-40 for uber/lyft if included. Usually use SM for gas, but still first year so will use discover for 10% although for trivial amount overall in cats.

Lol, I spend $500 - $600 a month, most is business though. The business part gives me a good chunk of free UR or MR points though.

Live 3.5 miles from work so 7 miles round trip.. My my new/old 2015 car well 20 month old car has a whopping 6k miles on it now.

I'd be walking and biking to work, I wouldn't have to go to the gym, lol!

Just more of the same. Would be nice to throw in more useful categories like utilities/cell phone/cable/walmart/target etc.... I maybe spend $50 a month on gas....I dont even use my Sallie Mae for groceries because the cap is so low, and I never shop Amazon,maybe twice a w year for like $40. So my SM card doesnt really work for me.

Discover needs to come up with a "pick your own category" for more usefullness. JMO

The ones I cringe at are....gas, Home improvement, ground transport, and Amazon...

I dont spend more than $50/mth on gas, I live in an apt 3 miles from job, Ive never used Uber/Lyft, and I dont ever shop Amazon. LOLOL

I can usually find something useful in each quarter, even if the majority of the categories don't apply to me.

Gas at 5% trumps my BoA Cash Rewards, so on the occasion that I get gas or go to a convenience store (mine all code as fuel), Discover'll get used. I spend a lot on gas but it's still not bad.

Ground transportation isn't very useful to me - I don't even think we HAVE Uber/Lyft here (and if we did, Uber'd go on Cap One anyway) and we also don't really have public transportation here either, but if tolls count this time around I could potentially throw some spend onto my EZ Pass to load it up.

Wholesale Clubs can get some spend though. I live a few miles from a Sam's Club and already carry a membership there so I could pretty easily bulk-buy household items and non-perishables to last throughout the year (kinda like how Sam's is a category now). Places that don't have Sam's but have Costco -- Costco takes Discover on the website so that could be a work-around if you have a need for it.

Ground transport covers a lot more than Uber/Lift. From the offer:

"Ground Transportation is defined as local and suburban commuter transportation, including: ferries, passenger railways, taxicabs, limousines/rental cars and charter/tour bus lines."

For me, the biggest potential is Rental Cars. DW and I are going on a five-country cruise in February and we often end up renting cars when we're visiting ports.
