Apple Care Benefits via Credit Cards?

To anyone's knowledge, are there any other benefits of purchasing Apple Care using Capital One or Discover? Any additional coverage or anything?

Called Discover tonight to ask about their purchase protection and she mentioned they had a specific list of things not covered, such as computer hard drives and things like that. So Im just wondering if there is any additional coverage if I use one of these cards to purchase Apple Care or Apple Care Plu.

If that makes any sense?

Not really, the benefit on cards, really comes in where the standard warranty applies. AppleCare+ is a bit deeper in terms of going outside of the standard warranty, plus most cards have a certain timeframe the "event" has to happen in order to be covered. The only benefit I would say is a cash back card being used and checking to make sure your employer doesn't offer a discount at Apple.

I purchase all my expensive devices on Amex. They have fantastic purchase protection, extended warranty, etc. If anything happens thell pay to replace or repair it. I recently dropped my phone and after submitting the claim they reimbursed my account 900 for the phone and I can go buy a new one.

This sounds very interesting. Is there are specific Amex card which offers this benefit, or is it across the board universally on all Amex cards? Is there a set of terms online that discusses this benefit? Thanks.

All of their cards. 1,000 to 10,000 per occurance depending on the card. Purchase Protection is an embedded benefit of your Card Membership and requires no enrollment. It can help protect eligible purchases made on your Card when they're accidentally damaged, stolen, or lost, for up to 90 days from the date of purchase. Please read important exclusions and restrictions to see if your item is eligible for coverage.

How it Works

Report any theft, accidental damage, or loss immediately after the incident by filing a claim online or by calling toll free 1-800-322-1277.
Provide copies of your original receipts, plus a copy of the police or incident report if the item was stolen. We may ask for other additional documents to process your claim.
If the item was damaged, keep it in case you're asked to return it to AMEX Assurance Company. We may reimburse you for the shipping cost, so also keep a copy of your shipping statement.
We will review your claim, which typically takes 7-14 business days. You can check your claim status anytime online or by calling 1-800-322-1277.

Here's my situtation....

This summer, Apple replaced my 2011 MacBook Pro for free with a 2015 model. So, since the purchase wasnt made with my credit card, I was wondering if I could get anymore warranty benefit by purchasing AppleCare+ with the card. Since I got a computer with no out of pocket cost, I certainly cant complain about paying the $350 for AppleCare.

Ok, thanks. I see the catch - purchases are covered for up to 90 days only from date of purchase.

It still can be valuable, but I wonder what the percentage is of claims that actually get approved, and exacttly what th crtiteria is for claim approval.

I can't imagine they're always reimbursing all cardholders every time who drop and crack their new iPhone or Apple Watch or it would start costing Amex a ton of money.

No. Apple's warranty coverage is specific to the country you purchased your computer in, because several countries have very specific warranty requirements. For example, in the US, Apple offers a one year limited warranty. In the UK, the law forces them to offer a 6 year warranty:

Also, AppleCare doesn't even kick in until your original warranty period expires. That's why you have up to one year from the purchase date (again, speaking as a US citizen) to buy AppleCare. I bought a MacBook Pro in 2014, and didn't get AppleCare for it until Autumn of 2015.

If that's true, then the apple store clerk had no clue and now it's past the 14 days since i bought the laptop and I can't return it but that doesn't matter cuz i'll still remain an american citizen so if I have issues i'll just take care of it on one of my many trips back and forth to the US.

Be careful with buying out of country AppleCare. And on Macs its AppleCare not AppleCare+ (that's iphones, ipads and ipod touch)...take this from a former Apple contractor. The terms on it, does go by country of purchase, in other words, Apple can deny your claim, because AppleCare terms are country based. It was one of those "scream" at the wrong person moments a lot of times. The one benefit your card does have that hasn't been pointed out is price protection although rare on Applecare for a price drop.

The one thing I will say, AppleCare for Macs cover for 3 years, it doens't cover lost or stolen nor damaged Macs, this here is where your credit card may benefit for up to a certain amount of days. Look into pairing AppleCare witih SquareTrade, I always do that on my iPhones, and I take the insurance through AT&T.

The reason I pair up like that, on iPhones, AppleCare+ doesn't cover lost or stolen, but your wireless carrier insurance will albeit a higher deductible. SquareTrade came through where my AppleCare+ deductible was higher because it was total damage not just the glass, and I only came out of $75 and SquareTrade reimbursed the whole cost of my iPhone and since it was discontinued no longer doing the 64GB on the 6 at that time, they gave me the money to cover a 64GB iPhone 6s instead. (I had to take it to Twitter to get them to react and honor it originally, it's a part of their terms but a special person there decided I misread the print lol)

Overall, the longest duration I found was 120 days for Mastercard networked World and World Elite cards

You can still get global service on AppleCare, no matter what country you buy your Mac, that's one of the lovely parts on Macs. Not the same for all Apple products. As long as you take it to an Apple Certified Repair location or Apple Store for repairs or hop on Support CHat

The screens on 2015 Retina's seem to be more fragile than the 2011. And from what Ive read, if something happens to your screen, the entire top half has to be replaced (it's all one unit?) My 2011 had the infamous graphic card issue. At first, they tried to blame it on software issues. B.S. I was done playing nice at that point. They KNEW it was an issue on those models. So Lord forbid, something goes wrong with the display on the one they gave me.

How does Square Trade differ in coverage vs. AppleCare? They replaced it about 4 months ago, can I still add Square Trade? and how?

For ST it has to be added within the first 30 days. I would definitely still reach out to them to see if they would bend that. I believe you had a 90 day automatic warranty from Apple, on repair work out of warranty. I remember the issue you're talking about with the GPU, they did finally add it to their support site that it would be covered for certain serial numbers, release dates. You're right on the body, it's a single build on a hinge, all or nothing pretty much. I'm glad it was done for you overall. Check ST website. SquareTrade.com, usually they will ask for some type of proof of purchase.

So far I've put it on every iPhone I've had in the last 3 years, alongside AC+ and AT&T wireless insurance, one thing about that route, I go the lowest deductible for whatever happens, the only one thats a hiccup and higher is lost or stolen.

Now on Macs, I have yet to do Squaretrade head on, I've done them on my printers since HP always found a reason to push a software update right after the warranty ended that killed the wifi antenna in every wireless printer I had of their's now I'm Epson and have ST on them too.

DeeBee comment. How is Amazon able to offer AppleCare for $100 cheaper?

Cause private sellers are selling boxed kits. Not the same as auto-registered through Apple that ties directly with your serial and moves with the Mac. Really I would exhaust any possible discounts I had with Apple, in store, usually they have local business discounts, online they have corporate employee discounts (in store too with work ID) or college student or faculty of a school (don't have to teach there even PTO gets it and homeschooling parents)
