I'm actually disappointed as well. I felt quite sure your father would do well with CS, but this is yet another example of how they can be quite unpredictable at times.

All we can do is speculate at this point, and I'm even hesitant to do that since as you state we've both seen people get the 'big' CLIs with Synchrony even with modest incomes - I'm one of them. The only thing that I can see that might (?) be different, at least from my own profile, is that I had 10+ open accounts and some previous Synchrony history when I requested my CLIs. Lowe's is actually my oldest account (12 years), but my Sam's Club MC was less than a year old when I got the CLI, so unless their computer 'knew' about my other Synchrony history it might not have mattered. Other than that, I had a total of 20+ accounts reporting, if you include both closed and open, so my file isn't 'thin' by most standards.

While your father's CLI wasn't has generous as any of us were hoping for, going from $3800 to $6k is still quite respectable, and tells me that Synchrony will likely be more generous in the future. Since this CLI was through CS it might be worth checking online to see if there's the option for a CLI there; I don't know if the CS increase will block an online request, but in any case it's not a HP so there's no harm in trying. Lately people have been able to get CS-level "generous" CLIs by entering the amount they want to request, so there is a precedent there.

Please stress to your father that Synchrony can be unpredictable at times, and it's not that you gave him the wrong idea of what to expect... with his score and resources you had all reason to think that a large CLI would be possible, and it should have been.

I'm still hopeful that his next request will have better results, even if it won't be in time for the purchase he's wanting to make right now.

Those that have experience with the Amazon card, how high do they typically go with their credit limits? Are they at all like Lowe's which is also through Synchrony that gives out monster limits? Do you call the same Credit Solutions number that you call for Lowe's? I ask because my father has an Amazon card and would like a higher limit, but I have no experience with the card. Over Thanksgiving dinner I was telling him how easy it was for me to raise my Lowe's CL with a 3 minute phone call and I started wondering if the same would be true of Amazon since it's also through Synchrony. If anyone can offer some personal experience here that would be great before I have him make the call.

I think we buy more via Amazon these days than anywhere else. Prime is so **bleep** convenient, and it's gotten rare to NOT find any random specific item available on Amazon.

I'd have to pull the full order history for exact numbers, but we're easily spending in the low-to-mid five figures annually there recently. (And proportionally less at a whole pile of online and physical stores that used to get our business.)

I wouldn't consider any of the other Sync store cards useful to me... and held out a long time before getting the Prime card - but that 5% really adds up. (And it's not time-limited and capped like Discover or Freedom.)

@austinguy907 wrote:

Do they sell cars?

Well... yeah, actually. Did you see the news last week about that? Starting in Italy as a test: http://www.reuters.com/article/us-fiatchrysler-amazon-idUSKBN13D1SI

Right now the US service is just an index and review site - but the framework is there for more (if state laws end up allowing it, anyway):

https://www.amazon.com/b?node=10677469011

Austinguy, Is that the same number used for Lowe's accounts? I can't remember which number I called when I bumped my Lowe's up to $30k.

Wondering if Credit Solutions number is the same for all Synchrony accounts.

So Amazon has no problem giving out huge limits like Lowe's does? No difference here?

My father bought a TV a few months back and he has exactly 2 credit cards... the Amazon card with I believe a $5k limit and a Chase card with a $25k limit. He wanted to use the Amazon card, but the TV was almost $10k so he couldn't so naturally he used his Chase. I know he was pissed that he couldn't use the Amazon card though. Upon speaking with him today he had no idea you could even request a CLI; he always thought they were just given to people if the creditor thought you were deserving of it.

His FICO 08's are all 820-830 so I'm fairly certain that he would get just about the highest CL that Amazon would give. Good to know they go $30k. I know Lowe's goes $35k without IV. I wonder if the same limit is true of Amazon since they are through the same institution. Anyone else have any experience pushing the limits with Amazon?

@Anonymous wrote:

Synchrony is a wild one. I have a Lowes' card with $2,400 CL, which I'm very happy with. I think the original CL was much higher, but I called to drop it. My Synchrony Crate & Barrel card has a CL of $20,000. I called again to lower to $2,000. It does not make sense to have such high CLs. I would not want to keep the bad quality Synchrony CLs to be a big part of my total CLs. Synchrony credit is so easy to abtain.

One piece advise I can give to you is that, for Synchrony, only get the credit you need. It does not do you much good to have monster CLs from them as main part of your total CL.

So it can go higher as what Chase sees. It can even go up to $50k CL if you can show the income etc. I dropped my CL to $5k now. Enough for me.

I do not think Chase would extend me more CL. Already too high, six figures.
