Given the impending demise of the Sallie Mae, these categories aren't bad.

Summer fun might mean another quarter of gas.

I know it doesn't fit for everybody but those first two quarters are fine for me will probaby be able to hit cap, its too bad no more costco love for my freedom. I have to debate whether to just get 1x ur or if i want to use citi costco at costco coming up next year.

So no department stores, no Amazon, no big box stores? In other words no categories where people spend large amounts of money. When it comes to rotating cash back, Discover has them beaten.

I would say not neccesarily for some people that have CSP, CSR, or ink plus freedoms 5x UR > 5%cashback from discover. It really comes down to the individual. I actually like having 5x on gas and groceries for first half of the year.

That's a little disappointing, personally, as I mostly care about cash back at wholesale clubs, but we'll see if they adjust it over the year. They do that right?

The last 2 quarters are still basically unnanounced, right? Summer Fun or Holiday could still be updated to include Wholesale Clubs, I guess. I didn't get the Freedom until right at the end of the 3rd quarter in 2016, but when 2016 started, they hadn't definitively added Wholesale to 3 quarters yet, had they?

Either way, disappointing so far, but not too bad. Gas is nice I guess, and Grocery for the 2nd quarter is always great. I might not hit the max in it without Wholesale, but I could make a run. We don't have kids, but we do buy an awful lot of beer. I always get a kick out of cashback for buying beer.

No wholesale clubs mentioned there at all, but 3 ended up having it. 2nd quarter was grocery then wholesale was added later (though the 2017 already says wholesale excluded but 2016 didn't). Then "Restaurants" ended up including wholesale, and then the same for "Holiday Shopping".

Seems like 2017 has a decent shot of getting 1-2 quarters of wholesale.

I feel like Chase has no idea what to do with this card any more. The last 6 months they took advantage of the Costco switch to Visa but I think it was a lazy move, though I'm sure welcomed by those who shop there. But not filling in the last 2 quarters of what 2017 will offer isn't very attractive to those wanting a cash back card when competition clearly will spell out what you get. Maybe Chase wants it that way, I guess. I do miss the Movie Theater and Amazon categories. All I use this for now is gas.

I think Freedom should take a lesson from u.s. bank and old school programs, and let you free pick categories of specific metchants or billers a la carte. For example 5% off my cable and cell phone bill is more than Id save all year trying to use it on the provided categories outside of grocery.

Indeed. In fact, all of the quarterly category cards are becoming rote. Inasmuch as has been released, the 2017 calendar is very little different from last year. Citi is identical except for the substitution of Airlines for Car Rentals in Q3. Discover's added Wholesale Clubs in Q1.

Repeat of Grocery on the Freedom in Q2 will be a welcome respite for the SallieMae card refugees. We can also hope for a repeat of Restaurants for Q2 Discover and Q3 Chase, but I guess they'll keep us in suspense for a while.

I'd have to check, but I'm pretty sure it's all 3 (Costco, Sam's BJ's). And they always just say "wholesale clubs" in the promo (not just one or two specific ones). I do normally check the fine print to, and I do think it typically says all 3.

Chase has been trending to a "slow reveal" on their 5% categories. Discover is out with the entire year all at once, but Chase has been using each quarter as a way to do a short term promo.

Adding the Costco / Wholesale category late in 2016 was an attempt to leverage the Costco switch to VISA.

In late 2015, they bumped up the Amazon rate to 10 UR points to counter Discover's Amazon quarter.

So I expect we will see more interesting categories for the second half, once we get to June 2017. It's too early for Chase to announce the last half of 2017 while we are still in 2016.

And for those comparing Freedom UR categories to Discover categories, the 5% on Discover is not the same thing as 5 UR points. Discover does have some broader category interpretations, such as in the Transportation categories early in 2016, but the acceptance of Discover in those areas can be a problem. The Sea-Tac parking garage does not take Discover, for example, so even if Discover has a transportation category for Parking, sorry, you can't get 5% there. As I found when returning on a flight in Q1 2016.
