This is after they ran out of metal for the CSR?

They must've gotten a deal from Amazon's marketing department, I can't see any other way this entire product makes sense, though I do know multiple people (and this is saying something as I don't meet a ton of folks) that were basically using the old Amazon card at 3/2/1 as a daily driver anyway.

20 years ago my upgrade to a Citibank Visa Gold involved real changes... the card was reissued with a different BIN and the benefits were very different (as well as the requirements to qualify). Now you can get a 'gold' card off the rack at CVS. For a while 'Platinum' became the premium brand, but that lasted even a shorter period than the 'Gold'; most base-level debit cards are 'Platinum' by default.

It could be that metal cards are the next big thing, at least with issuers who are trying to set themselves apart from the pack. I can't see it taking off across the board long-term, though (just my own speculation). I also can't imagine if all my current cards were metal... that would be one heavy wallet.

While I have never been a fan of the "I am a big-shot" view of metal cards, this seems a very odd choice for making it metal. Most people will (mainly) use this card only on Amazon, and so, while you could hold the card up to your web cam, generally there won't be anyone to see to be impressed....

I agree. I can't remember the last time I actually swiped my card; it just sits in my file cabinet. Chase hasn't even bothered to send me a chip version of it yet. Unfortunately, the metal replacement will likely also sit in my file cabinet.

Agree mine will never leave my safe and just stored on amazon.. So I guess the CSR/Ritz will just have to do.. Somehow I bet this card since it is no AF and metal will just get alot of applications for that alone.

Well, just as an anecdotal datapoint.

If you exclude people from this forum or similar who "obviously know better" when I've gone out to shared lunches with people over the last 4 or so years, I've seen the Amazon card get dropped for the 2% rewards multiple times from multiple people.

We're a very very niche population group, there could well be a lot of other people who are using it, and of course we've all seen the metal card mania here... is there any reason to think the rest of the consumer base wouldn't feel similarly on that one?

That's the only thing I can think of, let's target a "OH MY GOD IT'S METAL!" card to the mass market, and just see what happens. There will be some default swipers ("I love my Amazon card!") whereas for us, odds are we'll never swipe it anywhere. I bought a little safe for when I'm going to be gone for 95% of the time from my condo for the next year roughly, this card is just going to get dropped into it.

And then all the Amex Plat users who use their MR points on Amazon, which gives less than 1:1 on a very low earning card (except now for airfare).

But I guess paying a single bill makes sense for some, if you don't want to have to go over multiple credit card statements.

You know.. I really did think I was SPECIAL when I got that preapproval in the mail for a First Premier GOLD card.. LOL!

Just imagine.. CriminalOne comes out with a metal card.. for only an additional $99/year fee... now, that is a marketing idea for them...
