I have a Chase Amazon Prime Rewards VISA and wanted to convert it from VISA Signature to a World MC. Has anyone done this with Chase or better yet, with this specific co-branded card? The reason is that I have the Chase Sapphire Reserve which is a VISA and would like to take both (so I can have both a VISA and MC for flexibility as some places only accept one or the other) when traveling internationally as they both have no foreign transaction fee. Of course, I also have a Barclays card for those Chip+PIN situations (Europe, mostly).

Thanks!

I don't think it can be done. Chase has some agreement with Visa whereby Chase will only use Visa unless a specific brand requests a different network. You'll have to google it if you want more information because it's been a long time since I read this, and I cannot remember the specific details. Citi has a similar agreement with MC.

From what I understand this is not possible from any creditors, not just Chase. Even from creditors like Capital One that offer both Visa and MC branded cards, if you open a card that's a MC they will tell you that it can not be switched or converted to a Visa; however it is opened is how it will be forever on that account.

Most banks will not just let you switch networks on a whim; they will only allow it if they initiate it (for example Citi switched most of their Visa products to MC in the past few years).

There have been a few success stories from BOA, and I know Navy will allow you to switch, but generally it's not something banks do.

With cobranded cards there are added complexities due to partner agreements, which likely stipulate that the Amazon Card must be issued as Visa. Citi is not allowed to issue the Double Cash as Visa because of their agreement with Costco -- they can't issue a 2% Visa because then it would take away from the value of the actual Costco Visa. Most if not all success stories of switching networks have happened with non-cobranded cards where banks can make their own decisions.

I wish they would do something similar to some of the european based banks.....

UBS for instance offers a credit card that is is dual-networked.... Basically the same account has both a Visa and MC card number..... (You physically get two cards, one with Visa branding and one with MC branding)

There are still places that only take one network over the other... its a PITA....

Favorite example is Costco... Moving to Visa was actually a good move since I do not have an Amex and my debit card started charging me 2$ fee for being on the wrong debit network....

Warehouse clubs tend to be mono-networked... Remember BJs used to use only Discover at one point, and I think its MC now but not sure....

-J

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I also have success with asking BofA to change a Cash Rewards VISA to a World MC just by calling and asking. I guess Chase sounds unlikely but you never know until you try so I wil probably call them at some point and ask. Although, perhaps it's pointless since those cards don't have chip+PIN anyway and so probably can't be used in many countries aside from Canada. Well, if I do call to ask I'll update this thread.

Cheers.
