Amex BCE gas station hold

Just got gas at sheetz with my Amex blue cash everyday and they put a $101 dollar hold on my card. Anyone know how long it takes before that comes off? I was supposed to book a flight tonight but that 100 took away from my already low CL.

Mine always holds about $100 as well but it's typically released by the end of the day and the true charge amount is shown as pending.

There's also a good chance you can still book your flight tonight anyway... go online and use the 'check your spending power' link and it will tell you if you can go over your limit.

I believe if you pay inside the store instead of paying for gas at the pump, they won't place an authorization hold on your credit card. You may want to try doing this since your Amex has a low CL.

I believe it's more of the gas station rather than Amex. I'm in the midwest and I use QuikTrip a lot. When I used my PRG or Platinum it always authorizes a $1 charge and then by the time I hang the pump up, that $1 is replaced with my actual charge. On the other hand, I've use Shell and BP in other states where it'll show an authorized charge for $75 and I believe BP was $50 and both of those lingered for a day until the station sent the actual charge. If you normally buy your gas at this place, like another poster mentioned, try prepaying. It creates guess work on how much you'll actually need but I guess it's better than having the lingering charge.

I agree with Loquat; it's the station not the card. Shell here will put $100 hold, normally falls off when it moves from 'pending' to posted for the real amount

While it could be the station, I've always experienced $100 holds at gas stations using AMEX and never such holds (it was either the actual value or $1 hold) when using my Sallie Mae Mastercard or my Freedom Visa.

Woke up this morning to the 100 hold gone and my original $40 had charge on the card. I've had this card for about a month and never had it hold this much before that's why I posted on the forums. I literally go to sheetz once a week for gas and use this card it's ALWAYS $1 but hey the charge is gone and everything is good now. Ended up using my cap 1 1.5% cashback to book my flight. Thanks everyone for your input!

I also echo that mine shows up as a $1 charge.

Also related: Have any of you noticed how some stations you slide the card and it's literally just a few seconds and it beeps you can now select and pump the gas? Others go through tne entire process of entering your zip code and then it can take up to 30-45 seconds before it approves.

Most gas stations are set to preapprove credit cards $100-150 when paying at the pump. Just pay inside and it won't apply this large hold. The gas pumps are programmed to do this, not the inside registers. These holds can last for a few days depending on card used. My AXEX BCE hold is like a day when I paid at the pump last. Never pay at the pump if you need your credit limit available.
