The only downside would be that certain of us current Platinum cardholders have a super low interest rate that we may not be willing to give up in exchange for the higher interest rate on the cash back card. I would not want my interest rate to increase.

Unfortunately, when they offer rewards, the interest rate goes up (sometimes quite a bit).

There also seems to be a 3% charge for balance transfers (3% fee per balance transfer) on this card, when balance transfers on my current card are unlimited and free.

Just as information, this is a profile-dependent product for current cardholders, at least according to Alliant's own web page.

I think I would most likely decline the invitation because I value my much lower interest rate and also my unlimited free balance transfers. There may be others who would be interested.

He also stated that 3 or more new accounts and inquiries in a year is considered to be a lot by Alliant.

This does not mean you won't get a card if you have a number of new accounts and inquiries, but the risk of being turned down is fairly high, and the alternative is getting a low CL if you do get the card.

Alliant is pretty conservative. I like them a lot but there is no denying that they are conservative.

They also use an unusual Pinnacle scoring system which for many of us shows a score that is 30-50 points lower than our regular FICO score.

Hmm, I think I'd be interested. It would take about $12k non-category spend per year for this card to beat a 2% cash back card. I could get past that threshold by paying for my property tax with it. I think they charge a 2.3% fee to use a CC to pay for property tax where I live, so it wouldn't make sense to use a 2% card, but with a 2.5% card it makes perfect sense, then the rest of year year would be all gravy at 2.5%.

I hope I get an invite.

This seems to be the new way of earning loyalty: 2.5% in a walled garden (whether walled by membership like in USAA, AF, or both). It's an interesting tactic that may well prove more effective in longer term swipe fee generation than the current standard of offering a lump sum bonus.

Is it not a new acct. The acct number will change, but will still keep the same open date, since its an upgrade. Good luck to anyone wanting to try!

Great info, thanks!

So if I upgrade now to get the 3%, can I then after a year downgrade back to the 1% card to avoid the annual fee?

Chris.
