Diners Club Credit Card

Does any one have a Diners Club Credit card? Do you know who issues it and what is the criteria for approval ?

I think Diners club stoped issuing cards?. Some people say they ran out of plastic I think..

BMO Harris Bank issued Diners Club Cards in the United States. They have not issued any additional cards since late 2014 or early 2015. Checked and their website still says applications for "Consumer" Cards are closed.

My Discover card has the Diners Club logo on the back. IIRC they own the rights exclusively in the US now. Disco has no FTF's, which wouldn't be very valuable on the Discover Network but under the Diners Club network it can help out.

I actually phoned them last year and it is not closed for sure. The CSR seemed to indicate they do anticipate at some point allowing applications again. Apparently they grossly miscalculated the impact of the MyFICO rush when the mania was at peak tilt, lol.

Right, but that "temporarily" period has become rather long!

Discover actually owns Diner's Club. They franchise or licence banks in countries to issue Diners Club. In the US and Canada the franchise holder is Harris Bank. I wish they would opening up the application process again.

That statement you cited has been on their website back to the day they shut down applications. You phoned last year and he we are another year later and nothing has changed. Seems to me they are at a minimum in no hurry to reopen applications.

Professional Cards are not available. They stopped taking application when it was owned by Citibank in 2008.

I actually have an AAdvantage Diners Club - of course, not issued by a US financial institution, but rather a South American one. Diners Club is the main card used in South American countries and they market them heavily. (Oh, and like AMEX here in the US, they're NPSL charge cards)

Hey @Anonymous, I have a quick question... do you have any problems using your AAdvantage Diner's Club in the U.S.?

I know that in theory it should be accepted anywhere Discover is, but since there are more than a few tales of Discover not working correctly overseas (when technically it should) I am just wondering if you have similar issues, but in the reverse.

In truth the real DIner's Club that was a charge card with it's own network and all sorts of gloating over it's being exclusive is long gone. Common ... issued as a MasterCard? Hardly carrying on the mystique of a classic gone by. Got my first exclusive Diner's Club Card back in 1973 and then people swooned over it. Yeah right ... a charge card to say the least ... anyway had a Carte Blanche and American Express Gold with a bank line of credit attached (was I recognized as being exclusive then?).

@Anonymous depends, @UncleB. I've actually had far less success than AMEX. I haven't had my AMEX declined yet, but my Diners Club gets declined more often than not.

The funny thing is, on receipts, it can either show up as Discover or Diners Club, depending on the cc processor the merchant uses. Also, not everywhere that takes Discover takes Diners Club, as the number structure is different (more similar to AMEX than Discover) so it'll just say "Invalid card type", even if they take Discover.

I tried using my Discover in Ecuador last year, and it worked great, since it processed as a Diners Club transaction

Seems the consumer version was a one time only and done for them or else it would already have been offered again by now.

Every now and again it's noticed that certain lenders do this.

This is interesting...I don't have Diners but recetnly got a Discover card, when attempting purchase a ticket through Norwegian Airlines, I was unable to get the purchase to go through online, even though it said they accept Diners. But if I called in then they could process the payment (but would miss out on some of the perks of purchasing online, ie uber cheap flight insurance). So after that experience, I am very skeptical about taking my Disco to Europe this summer. Ultimately ended booking a ticket on British Airways which had no problems accepting the disco online.
