I Need A Credit Card. What Should I App For?

When I started repairing my credit my scores were 532 (TU), 604 (EQ) and 654 (EX). My current scores are in my signature and I'm pretty proud of them (even though I know they're still not the best )

I had like 8 credit cards when I was in college in 2000 which is how I messed up my credit in the first place. But now, I've settled and paid most of them, they're all closed and none of them are showing on my CR. In fact, the only things on my CR are student loans, a small Paypal Buyer Credit account with a CL of $130 (reports like a revolving CC) and my mortgage.

I don't want to go app crazy but I haven't felt this confident in a while. I used to be afraid to apply for jobs or credit because I knew I would be turned down. Matter of fact, I went to Dallas last year and was nervous about renting a car but my credit was approved for the car within seconds so my confidence has been growing steadily. Now that I understand how credit works and am responsible, I want a credit card to help me continue to build my credit but I don't want a bunch of inquiries dragging me down.

With my scores, who/what company should I app to try and get a card?

Sorry for the long anecdote! I love the myfico community so sometimes I feel like I'm having a convo with friends, lol

If going for a new credit card, then focus on an EX puller because of your scores. Macys and BofA comes to mind.

I would also be cautious of companies that you have had problems with in the past. You might want to try preselector sites for BOA, Cap1, HSBC exc. I know I had problems with BOA in the past, and still to this day receive no offers from them.

I shop at Target quite a bit and found on whogavemecredit.com that they are easy approvals so I apped and got approved for the store card Not bad but not what I was looking for.

Cap1 has a design-your-own card feature so I got all wrapped up in that and ended up denied. I think I was requesting too much of the best features. I got a pre-approval letter from them a while back and I should have just gone with that but now I have to wait 45 days if I'm gonna app with Cap1 again. I did not qualify for any BoA pre-approvals, according to their website, so I decided not to app with them.

I'm happy with the Target card but I really need (probably more want than need) a credit card (a non-store card) so I will wait and try Cap1.

Just a note to keep in mind, BOA preapproval site will often not show any offers for a variety of reasons. I have never rec'd any on the site but I was approved for a Worldpoints card with 7.5k limit and have received pretty decent cli's. I think my Exp was about 670 when I was approved. Just a thought. I dont' know how accurate they are but Finance Globe(?) will also show you cards with average approval scores. Good luck!

Household Bank will almost for sure give you a card.

What about Macy's, after a little while with store card, you could probably get upgraded to Visa.
