Hmmm. interesting. It does day only new accounts for QS & Venture get one, existing customers will get one only when a new card needs to be issued, as in expiring expire date.

It says it used NFC, near field communiction, which is what smartphone use - wouldn't the card need a micro battery for power supply?

I would love to use contactless payment more, I'm not a fan of chip cards - the wait time and the honk, honk, honk most terminals use to tell you to take the card out.

I've used my LG G2 contactless payment exactly once, when Wells Fargo offered a $10 credit a month ago to use their Wallet app included in their Android mobile app. It understandably only works with WF cards and I only have a debit card for my checking account, and I don't use debit. The Walmart app works with multiple cards, but only at Walmart terminals in store. I tried Android Pay, for about one hour! It makes you lock the phone with a PIN, I'm not goign to enter a PIN 20 times a day to wake the phone up, so I disabled it. Without warning me Android Pay removed all the cards I had loaded into it, I only found out when Discover texted me that my card had been removed from Andorid Pay. OK, let's see: Settings, Apps, Uninstall.

I had a Wamu debit card years ago with paypass NFC in the card itself. I haven't seen one in a long time though.

I have a BCP that has contactless and it has an antenna that loops around inside of the card and is connected to the EMV chip. They don't need a battery since it's the terminal that is powered.

Huh? I wonder if that's just the preferred version? I got my BCE last January and there's nothing like that in it.

AmEx doesn't issue them by default. You have to call in and explicitly say you want contactless.

I don't fully understand how the EMV chip works, but that make ~~since~~ sense, since the terminal power to activate the chip when inserted, the terminal's NFC can also provide any needed powers.

I want one, but I've been a fan of Amex. I'll call Cap One & see if they'll send me one for my QS. I assume you have to hold the card face down near the terminal?

EDIT: Logged into my Cap One account & used chat, I have a replacement card w/contactless payment on the way!

Cap 1 sent me a letter last year offering to replace my QS chip card with a contactless card.

I took them up on it and used it a couple of times at QuikTrip just to try out the novelty of it.

Just like Apple Pay, it takes quite a bit longer than swiping and you can't use it very many places

Edit: By compatible I meant the details can be entered into the Android Pay app, then Android Pay can be used on a smartphone to pay via NFC.

I like using Android Pay because of the convenience and the security, but paying via NFC is still a relatively new payment option, so its availabilty at the payment terminal is sorta hit or miss.

So now people with Capital One NFC cards will have to make sure they keep their cards in one of those metal "safe" card holders so they don't have to worry about thieves walking around casually scanning wallets and purses to grab CC data?

I haven't used NFC for payment (I root my phones, so Android and Samsung pay disable themselves "for my security"), but my security basey is recognized ascot 3-4 inches from the scanner... If the cards will work the same way, won't that make card cloning even easier?

How would that even work, given that the entire point of contactless technology is supposed to be to make card cloning more difficult? I'd imagine Cap One and other issuers would have put additional protections in place to that effect that we don't necessarily know about or are supposed to know about.

Now you will have to keep your cards in an RF shielded case to prevent the

person behind you in line, ya that guy with a portable reader from stealing your info.

Every new technology claims great advances, however most end up with a lot of problems.

I want a card that needs to be inserted or swiped. (I can give up 20 seconds of my time)

I would request a card without this "feature". If it is not possible,

my CC account would be closing.

The equipment needed to be able to read such a card from farther than 1-2 inches away wouldn't look inconspicious at all. I don't think this is a big concern.

Apple pay doesn't take longer than swiping....at all. Phone, thumb, boom. compared to wallet, card, swipe. It's the same. And if you're using chip, then either apple pay or swipe is so much faster. The chip is literally the worst thing to happen to retail lines in a long time.
