Discover Account Combination?

Who has, or had both a Discover IT and a Discover Miles card?

Have you attempted to close one and combine credit limits in the past? Does Discover allow this?

I'm considering applying for a Discover Miles to take advantage of the double your cash back promotion, and I would really like to combine the two accounts into one.

Please share your experience with Discover.

I feel like i've read somewhere in this forum that someone was able to combine their cards...but I could be way off too!

Min of 3 months before they allow a combination of CL's.

Some have done this, others have applied and been offered to add to existing CL, and others dumped the 2nd card because they didn't get what they wanted for a CL.

So it sounds like it's possible, but merely conjecture as of right now. If anybody has done this with Discover, your input is appreciated.

When I call and ask for a CLI they tell me I can either combine my two cards, closing one of them, or move part of one to the other. There may be other conditions that apply because whenever there is a thread like this you see reports of those who have combined, those who have been offered the option, and those who are told they can't. It may depend on age of accounts and one or two other factors. Both of my cards (IT and Miles) are over 12 months old. I don't remember being offered combining before that.

That's good to know. My Miles card turns a year old in June, don't use it like I should, though. Maybe I'll try to combine this fall. Thanks!

I haven't read through that long Discover thread that's floating around here. While I do believe that thread focuses more on generating CLI's I wonder if there's any relevant info on Discover account combinations in there?

The info I originally posted above this one is from the various people posting about having 2 cards or apping for an additional card to find that they didn't get the CL they want but couldn't combine it with their original card for at least 3 mo's. I gave you the condensed version because there's 80+ pages on my thread already but, it does cover a lot more than just CLI's.

I was told no as well. The Discover It card and the chrome are interchangeable in the eyes of Discover. I was presented with the option to apply for a Miles, but I declined.

I guess I stand corrected in a previous statement. I did see it somewhere though on Discover's site that you could only PC away from Miles into another card due to the incompatibility in the rewards programs.

According to this though there's been a change as to being able to make the switch. I think it's more of a PC vs a CL swap from one account to the other. For those with a single account going from Miles to IT have had issues but, moving a CL from Miles to IT wasn't an issue.

Hopefully Discover will make it as simple as Cap1 to combine accounts and credit limits in the future. Although I've heard that's getting more challenging to do as well.

Yes, this is the Master Discover thread I was referring to. Thanks Austin, I will make it my goal to read through it. I do have a Discover It that's just hit the one year mark, and I'm contemplating going for the Miles card maybe next year.
