Is there any rhyme or reason to getting the shopping cart trick to work? I have gotten 4 comenity cards within the last month and seems lately I can't get anything to pop up.

I would be more concerned that they just might shut you down for getting too many cards in such a short period of time. Remember just because you can get a card easily doesnt necessarily mean its a good thing.

I would be worried getting so many SCT cards. I see a lot of posts about accounts getting closed.

If you've been approved for four (4) SCT cards in the last month you really, really need to take a break for a bit if you want to keep them.

Seriously, I'm not trying to dodge your question here but it would be a shame to take the AAoA hit and have it all go away.
