For those who have been denied a CLI for CapOne for "too many inquiries or too many new accounts"... seems CapOne has been tightening up. I have read some other posts of people saying just apply for a new card and you'll get it. My question is this. If you were declined for a CLI for those reasons, would you not be denied a new card for the same reasons? I know the limit of the new card would most likely be better than what you would get on a CLI -but I still think the denial would come. Or is it that CapOne has only changed the way they do things when it comes to cLI and not new accounts?

In the last 6 months I only have 3 on TU, 1 on EQ, and 2 on EX. I have way more from 18-24 months ago-that is by far my biggest chunk of INQs.

I just either want to close my CapOne card, or open a Venture card and combine the QS into the new Venture. That is my dilemma. Close or try for a new card to combine and close???

Unfortunately Cap1 is unpredictable right now. If you asked six months ago I would say go for a new account. But right now its a crap shoot.

Some Cap1 cards do not get CL increases often (some not at all).

I was stuck with a QS (originally a plat) that would never go above $3,800. At the time I had scores approaching 800 and other cards in excess of $25,000 for the credit lines.

I hit the CLI button one day and same result, no CLI for me. I had read on here about the Venture cards having big CL's so I apped a Venture One and received $20,000 instant approval. So today, I have a QS card that is $25K+ (thanks to combining limits) and a Venture that is at $10K (This was a new app to get sign on and convert to a no AF card)

I recommend you apply for the Venture One and get the bigger sign up bonus. Hopefully that will also get you a larger limit.

Cap1 isn't going anywhere so why not wait until those inquiries fall off. Do you really need a higher CL with Cap1 or can you get better benefits with another card? Ultimately, the choice is yours. Good luck!!

My original QS opened in Sept 2014 w/$10k SL never got a CLI, either auto or requested. The reason I was declined for a CLI was always "monthly payments too small", this even having a $4k BT that I paid off with large payments.

So last August when the pre-qual page gave me pre-approval for either another QS or Venture. I might have done better app'ing for a Venture as they seem to push the card I rarely travel so I app'd for QS & was approved with another $10k SL. In March I combined it with the orignal QS, giving it a $20k CL. The original QS has an APR of 13.45% APR while the 2nd one was around 20% APR, so easy choice which one to close..

As for being denied for a new card for the same reason a CLI was denied, Cap One's pre-qual has never steered me wrong.

I have a cap1 quicksilver one with a $1,500 limit. My minimum payment every month is about $27. I pay $75 a month on it. They denied my CLI saying my monthly payment amount is too small.

So I applied for a new cap1 card and was approved for the platinum with a $1,000 limit.

It seems all the old "rules" have gone out the window... or at least many of them.

I'll have a data point in June with my QS Signature Visa... it was nearly maxed last month before I PIF (limit is $10k) so lack of use can't be used as an excuse for that one.

The Venture WEMC I got in January has had consistent usage until this month, and the "customary" CLI request after the third statement was denied... oddly, I never got the letter on that one (I didn't have paperless set up yet).

From what I can tell, though, the pre-qual tool is still solid, at least for now.

Personally, I think it has jack poop to do with inquiries at all. It's just an easy turn down option for the system when they don't want to hand a CLI out. I believe Cap1 is slowing down due to losses...same as discover. You post huge losses and things will tighten up.

Been dealing with Cap1 for years, only had a few CLI's. Have multiple cards 20K and above, FICO's are EQ 750, TU 779, Ex 783.......income north of 175k. Closed all Cap1 cards once and re apped several years ago......still stuck @ 7K. Don't use the card much because of this, but even after heavy use for 6 mos they still wouldn't budge. Thinking about axing them again for good. I have the QS and they offered to "upgrade" me to a QS1 or Venture 1. They really love annual fees. Their reason for denial has always been "payments have been too low"......my utilization on all cards is 3-4%

I should have my own data point on this later this month. My unsecured Platinum MC ($3,000 SL) will be hitting its 91-day mark post-approval/activation in a few more days, and my third statement will also be cutting shortly. I'm going to keep my request conservative if I have the option to select an amount; under the current circumstances overall with Cap One I figure my best course is to just accept what I'm given if I'm given anything, even if it's just $100. No sense in poking the bear, especially with my automatic Credit Steps increase coming up later this summer.

My tuppence.

I keep threatening to get rid of my Cap 1 cards for their excuses and lies. No it was not my first CC. I got my first Cap 1 Platinum with a $500 CL, no credit steps, 8 years ago, first CL (auto) of $1000 after 4 years open and it still sits there. 2 years after I had the 1st card Cap 1 sent me another Platinum card-pre approved "beacause you a great customer" with a CL of $750, again no credit steps. I got the first CL on this card in 2 years for $2000 (auto) but before the increase on the 1st card. My daughter was the AU on the 2nd card. Both cards were used but Cap 1 made it difficult by doing a fraud check on every purchase. They didn't get mine every time but 9 of 10. The AU card had a fraud alert every time. Their excuse-it was for my security, it was being used in a different state than the billing address, I had told them that first, She and I would constantly have purchases declined and I would have to call Cap 1, who insisted it didn't happen that often. I started calling before either of us made a purchase, which they said wasn't necessary, but the fraud checks stopped after this. Every time Iried for a CL I got reasons like lack of use, not enough payment history, enough available credit on other cards, card isn't eligible, etc. Shortly after the 2nd card renewed Cap 1 PCd it to QS1 without my permission and told me I could not decline it. All that changed was getting 1.5% cash back. I have a 3rd card with a $500 CL. It was bought from HBSC. It took almost 3 years to transition and during that time CAP 1 would send me letters not to use the card. I lost auto CLIs that were promised, I lost cash rewards because I could,n't get them high enough to redeem because the card was declined a lot. The CAP 1 EO told me that card would never get a CLI. I called last week to find out if my cards were ever going to get increasesor should I just close the accounts. The rep told me I had never asked for a CLI, told me the 2 I had received 4 years ago on 2 different cards, but wouldn't say anything about the 3rd card. I've had problems I haven't mentioned, but they've never given the reason of inquiries, late payments (i don't have any) or utilization as a reason for denying a CLI, just anything internal they can think up

I was actually on 'stand-by' to make a call to a CSR when my Wallet app notified me it was approved; it was a pleasant surprise). They are not the flashiest, but I don't have to worry about them giving me (or my AU) any grief at the point of sale if I happen to be out of state or shopping at a 'weird' hour, which is worth a lot. As I've said before, "it just works".

TL;DR... like everyone else I wish (and hope) they'll loosen back up eventually with CLIs, but I'm not ditching them over it. They have been a solid partner for many years and I like having one of their cards in my wallet.

Thx for all the replies.

@AJC.... you crack me up. I app' for Credit One on your suggestion. Instant Approval for $300. $295 start up fees. Yay! I'm so happy.

@Charlie... I agree. I don't think it has to do with inquiries or too small of payments or any reason they give. Lately they give things that aren't even true. I even saw one that says balances too low compared to limits-being penalized for PIF before the payment date or for keeping your Utilization in check. All BS reasons. I too think it is from them taking a loss and it is all over the news.

@Donny..... tho I agree that CapOne gets dissed a lot for things that they shouldn't since they do give people a chance when others won't.... I don't think you should assume people who have CapOne cards got them first or that nobody else would give them one. There are plenty of us who got CapOne cards after having clean high score reports. I sort of get what you were saying-I just might have said it a bit less.....aggressively.

@Reighn...... I Agree with you. I am in the same boat and have been debating my CapOne situation for a long time. I always end up just keeping it and using it once or twice a month and thinking one day I'll be glad. But it has got to the point where it's a pain to actually use it. I either need to close it, or open a new one and combine it into the new one (or vice versa) the 3 HPs is really holding me back.

Thx again for all the replies. I still have no clue what I will do, but I'm sure I will let you know when I do.
