I read somewhere that after 34,500 or 35,500 they request income verification but besides that I've seen people post with 50k+ limits. Not sure where the highest limit realm is.

This all has to do with the dreaded "Financial Review" and itn't based on any hard and fast rules from Amex. My Delta Skymiles card is at 37.8K (I think) and Amex has yet to conduct an FR on me.

Ask for the CLI and if Amex wants to conduct an FR on your account, you can always tell them you are not interested in the CLI at this point. Amex could also counter your CLI request with one they are willing to give you without them doing an FR.

There are plenty of posts on this in MFF. Just search.

And to answer your question - too high a limit for Amex is the one they won't give you, FR or no FR.

AMEX won't do a financial review based on a CLI request. They may or may not ask for proof of income, which is optional.

Financial review isn't optional. It occurs when AMEX sees something it perceives as serious.

I think there are 2 different versions of asking this question. One is what are the highest limits you can get from Amex (IV provided) and one is what are the higest limits we've seen from Amex without IV being provided.

WITH IV provided, there are plenty of examples of super high limits as already referenced in this thread. I feel like the OP is going more after the second group, that is those that have achieved > $35k or so limits with Amex without providing IV.

I'm currently AT $35k on my BCE without IV. In 3 months I'm going to see if I can CLI my way any higher without IV. There was one example above of $37,XXX without IV. What other limits have been achieved without IV?

We really need a sticky "FR is not the same as IV with Amex" post! Pooka said they'd seen lots of revolvers in the 6 digits and at least one over the million mark.

I'm curious to see how "relationship with Amex" differs from "credit worthiness" in this regard. I'll be asking for $48k on my SPG in July, my scores are going to be mid-740s but I have a great 16 year relationship with them and have easily run half a million through my charge cards and always paid on time. I also know that the Check Spending Power button on my Platinum gives me at least $80k on a single purchase. My wife will be asking for $36k in September on her ED, and while she has been an AU on my accounts for nearly the whole time, her first primary user account was just opened last year. Her scores will likely be 30-50 points higher though.

A lot of people here have been asked for IV at certain thresholds (often $34,500 is cited), but I think a lot of that has to do with financial resources and relationship. Also the fact that easily a majority of people here stating they get asked for IV are doing 3x CLI after 3x CLI to get to that point as quickly as they can. If underwriting gave you a $2k SL, they likely have reason to be hesitant to give you that 3rd 3x CLI 14 months later to $48,000. It's doubtful that someone with a long relationship who got a $30k SL on a newer revolver is going to get asked for IV if they ask for a $10k CLI just because they crosses the magical and mystical $34,500 mark.

FWIW, think the odds are somewhat low that Amex will ask me for IV for $48k (I also think a 2x CLI counter-offer is likely), but I would not be surprised if they ask my wife regardless of her AU status and regardless of her higher credit scores for $36k. As SPG will likely become my daily driver soon, I'll need a higher limit so I'm not constantly at 40-70% util every month.
