Good job to the GF.

First question....while I think everyone should have at least one Visa or MC, does she WANT any more ccs?

If so, for what purpose? Does she want cash back, travel rewards or simply a card for life's unexpected surprises? This will be helpful to narrow down options that will benefit her.

Seems like she is doing well.....she may not need cards but simply a card. Without knowing her full profile, I would suggest a Visa or MC to get started. Amex and Discover (I'm assuming discovery = discover) are not accepted everywhere. The easiest approval and easiest rewards would be Cap1 QS imo.

Whoops! Misread that. Well....her profile seems fairly thin, so on that note is suggest discover as they like thin profiles(generally!). Chase also has the freedom card which is similar to discovers cash back program, but they seem stinger with Cli's and they are always a hard pull unless they are auto cli's.

Amex bce is great for gas and groceries. Some may suggest the bcp, but that all depends on how heavy you use the card.

Finally, while those are two solid cards, there are some retailers who don't take amex or discover...even though it's rare. So for a mastercard/visa option is try for a Citi DC card. They tend to prefer thicker files and starting limits tend to be not as generous, but responsible use will help grow their limit.

Those are my suggestions. I tend to like cash back cards with no annual fees, so that's where I came up with those.

Your making me nervous for your GF 😐

Not every consumer does or should go on app sprees. In fact, most don't. She seems to be doing fine. I don't feel good about her applying for a bunch of cards she may not really want and/or need. That 750 is not made of steel. Now if she wants to apply for a bunch of cards, that's on her. I wish her luck.

Imo, just one.

That is really up to her. Given her scores( they are fico and not fako, yes?) Her odds of approval are pretty solid. I'd suggest looking at each card and deciding which benefits she likes the most.

Since you mentioned theyre all store cards, im assuming she'll want to get some main prime cards. Any Chase, BofA, Amex, Discover, etc would qualify as that. Not knowing what she likes to spend on, for a general input cards like the Freedom or unlimited, Discover It, BofA cash rewards, Amex BCE, Cap1 Quicksilver, are all cards I would recommend for basic needs like gas, groceries, food, etc. Some of those give rotating categories, some are 1-2-3 cash back types, and some are flat 1.5 back on everything. Most of all theyre all No Annual fee cards which is great too, but it also really depends.....but just for a start those are some cards ill throw out there if you wanna research them a little more!

I would suggest 2 total CCs to apply for to wit;
1 of either Disco or Amex depending on her spending that would benefit her the most in terms of rewards.
1 of either Visa or MC. I would suggest for her to have a CC with the same bank that she has a relationship with or banks with, i.e., Chase, Citi, BoA or CU. Again, whatever V/MC CC she can benefit the most based on her spending.

Heres my spin....

Even though she already has an MC store card (walmart)..... if were looking for some diversification and want cards with actual cash back.....

Iv had a similar situation with a family member....

And myself.. I had only one CC for almost 2 years (no store cards at all)

Id think of adding at least 2 cards... and maybe a third down the road...

I wouldnt rely on the walmart card for daily spend... and heck no to having a balance on Wally....

Discover and Amex are nice.... but as folks have said, acceptance can be an issue...

If it were me.. id go for a Disco card.. and some flavor of Visa (vs MC) to start...

(you could also go for some flavor of Amex as well. if you dont mind not having a Visa immediately (since you have the MC).. could go for both...

Both Discover and Amex are thinnish file friendly and that score will cinch the deal.....

I had to go seek a VISA because thats the only network Costco takes in-store.... and my bank charges 2$ for a Debit transaction at Costco..

Think having a card from a bank other than synchorny for the (visa/mc) would be a good idea too....

Getting a full 2% with easy redemption and full features. is a little harder... id tend to go for something like a Double Cash (alas its MC) or perhaps either a Chase FU or even a capital one QS.. (use the prequalify... and see if you can jump into the QS and not the one on the first try... (no AF) But CapOne cards almost ALWAYS Take 3 CR pulls)

Im fond of Blis but its a tricky card to get... and it doesnt have many of the features or extras another card would have... it has good deferred interest deals though..

Just a few ideas off the top of my head.. There is something to having 3 major ccs for scoring purposes as well...

From what I'm gather 2 cards tops, 1 of Disco or Amex and one Visa. I think Discover grows better and has a better cash back. Then a Chase Unlimited Freedom or BoA...hmm

She banks with BMO and she made this thread with me because she wanted advice that I just didn't have.

I think Discover grows better and has a better cash back. Then a Chase Unlimited Freedom or BoA...hmm

She banks with BMO and she made this thread with me because she wanted advice that I just didn't have.

The consensus is Bofa grows quick, if you search the fourms plenty of people have some monster lines from them. Some have started as low as $500 or 1k SL and end up with 20-30k lines from what Ive seen around here. On the other hand, I guess you are correct about Chase, theyre known to be a bit more stingy I believe.

I would say Discover and AMEX because they are fun cards to have for rewards and deals with no AF. I wouldn't go after Visa or MC just because. She is doing great managing 3 cards, so no reason to go on app spree. With her great credit she can get any card that she wants in the future so just keep it at that. If she sees a must have card in future then so be it.

This thread has become quite odd, she asked me to basically make a thread for what cards she should apply for since she has only has store cards and would like cash back, etc. She asked me for advice and I came here.
