Returns on credit cards and points reversal

Does anyone know the process and how long after your refund hits your card that points get reversed? I booked a flight on my amex, but then found a cheaper one so I booked that and cancelled the first one for a refund. It's kind of an irking thought knowing the transaction will post and then I will get the points, only for the refund to hit and ponts to get reversed. Am I the only one who hates this? lol. I rarely do returns/refunds on my card, which is strange. I'm sure I'm making it a bigger deal than it really is. Definitely a pet peeve of mine!

What's everyone's experience?

Dont want to be THAT guy lol, but if you cancelled and arnt actually making an actual transaction, then the point thing should be moot. Otherwise people would use their cards , cancel and keep the points from said transaction. Just makes sense that the points would get reversed, at least to me.

What's worse is when you're spending to get a signon bonus, meet it and then return something and forget that it will take your spending below the target and thus you miss the bonus by a few bucks. Happened to a friend of mine with a 50k American Airlines deal.

I returned a pair of glasses I purchased with my Amex a bit over a month ago. It took several weeks before I saw the promotional credit removed. I think it was around 3-4 weeks after the return when it happened.
